My favorite piece at the Louvre:
The Winged Victory of Samothrace, also called the Nike of Samothrace, is a marble Hellenistic sculpture of Nike (the Greek goddess of victory), that was created about the 2nd century BC. Since 1884, it has been prominently displayed at the Louvre and is one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world.
Nike is the Greek goddess of victory, both in battle and in sport. Nike was one of four children of the Titan god of war Pallas, and the Naiad Styx. Her siblings are Kratos, Bia, and Zelus, who represented Strength, Force, and Rivalry, respectively.
Most people recognize the name Nike in association with the globally popular shoe brand. This is not by accident. The founder of Nike, Phil Knight, chose the name purposely for its association with victory in sport. #nikeofsamothrace #justdoit #nike #louvre
