Nihill - Verdonkermaan
Ahhhhh black metal I have avoided you almost completely in all of these posts but alas no longer (yeah yeah Dispirit I remember too). Part of it is Black Metal fatigue to be quite frank. And the erosion of a good chunk of the sub-genres initial charm (now almost lost completely to professionalism and careerism) which was its home-recorded, independent spirit (hell it was downright reviled by other metalheads - well at least within the circles where "chops" and "scales" and "time signatures" were part of the common tongue). I liked the lo-fi, still do, recording techniques (whole discographies as demo tapes) and the thought of rich Scandinavians thinking they were rebels by playing with satanic imagery. Until all the tabloid shit started happening and then it revealed itself to be boring and transgressive in ways that things made by boys always get boring and transgressive. Ego and hubris and news-fodder gutted a pretty vibrant beginning and now it's a style rather than a regional expression which is, generally speaking, a shame. Bands abandoned ship years ago if they even lasted at all. Enslaved are now a stadium sized "Viking" band, Ulver making every kind of music other than Black Metal, Darkthrone ditched the trappings and are a better band for it ("Circle the Wagons" is better than the unholy BM trinity, for really reals) I guess Mayhem are still doing it's thing and Gorgoroth is...oh who cares at this point. There are some current bands that invoke the style and are making or have made some compelling shit. Nobody beats Oranssi Pazuzu or Palace of Worms (I'm sure you have yrs) but Nihill gets close with their labyrinthine suffocation metal. There's not a lot of room to breath in theses tracks but that's better than a million half sheets in yr favey glossy magazine any day. RIYL staccato beats and frayed edges.
