More than 8,000 migrants have been rescued in waters off Libya during the past 48 hours in difficult weather conditions, Italy’s coastguard said on Tuesday. “On Monday, we rescued about 5,000 people from four large boats, one smaller one and 18 rubber dinghies,” a spokesman told reporters.

People were pulled to safety by coastguard vessels, military ships operating under the EU’s border agency Frontex and aid boats run by privately funded organisations. Their efforts were coordinated by the coastguard. “Together with Sea Watch and Sea Eye our crew was able to save more people last night under bad weather conditions,” the German NGO Jugend Rettet tweeted on Tuesday, referring to two other nonprofit groups. #migrants #civilwar #migrantcrisis #happeningnow #death #drowning #libya #mediterraneansea #smuggler #police #spain #greece #refugees #syria #iraq #residents #unitednations #newspages #politics #newsoftheday #storyoftheday #life #photography #rescue #boat #thegulftoday

The UAE participated in observing the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) and the General Commands of Police nationwide organised various activities on this occasion. The activities highlighted the problems associated with drug use, and the risks they pose to individuals and communities.

Exhibitions were organised to raise the awareness of the community about the drugs and their dangers.

Colonel Saeed al-Suwaidi, Director-General of the Anti-Drug Federal General Directorate at the Ministry of Interior, stressed the keenness of the ministry in eliminating drugs suppliers as part of its national strategy to fight illicit drug trafficking and put in place measures to identify and prevent the drugs smuggling.

He said the number of people arrested for drug-related crimes had increased by 25 per cent in 2016 to reach 5,130 persons, compared with 4,113 captured in 2015. #uae #abudhabi #drugs #heroin #cocaine #captagon #pills #narcotics #arrested #development #localnews #police #report #newspages #newsmaker #newsoftheday #storyoftheday #happeningnow #abuse #smuggling #children #lifestyle #trend #money #business #thegulftoday @moiuae

An Ohio man accused of using one of his prosthetic legs to hit his wife has been arrested on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence.

Sandusky police say 63-year-old Richard T. Wilson Sr. was arrested.

Ronna Wilson told police that her husband became angry after officers responded to a report of him being disorderly. She said her husband later threw one of his prosthetic legs at her, striking her head, and threw her to the ground. She told police that her wrist injuries came from trying to block Wilson from hitting her with his other leg.

Police say the Sandusky man was jailed Saturday and denies assaulting his wife. Court records don’t indicate an attorney for him. A Lebanese Calligrapher has completed a two-year project to hand write a copy of the Quran, Islam's holy book, in the rarely-used and delicate Arabic-language Diwani font.

Mahmoud Bayoun, 80, believes this is the first time this has been done. In Diwani font, each letter can be written six or seven ways. "I wanted to do something no one has done", Bayoun told Reuters. "All fonts can be computerised but the Diwani font can't - because all computer fonts meet at a horizontal line but the Diwani (font) goes above, on and below the line." The Quran, approximately containing around 6,300 verses, is traditionally written in the Naskhi font, which is designed to be easy to read and write.

Bayoun, who had previously written out the Koran four times in simpler script, has studied calligraphy since he was 14 and is the official Calligrapher of Lebanon's prime minister.

He is unsure what will become of his latest work, but said that if the book does not find its own path, then it will be passed on to his children. #calligraphy #artistsoninstagram #quran #holymonth #holybook #art #calligraphyart #talent #lebanese #lebanon #happeningnow #happiness #firsttime #complexfont #dewanifont #arabic #literature #intelligent #newspages #newsmaker #newsoftheday #storyoftheday #picoftheday #photography #mahmoudbaydoun #artwork #handcrafted #middleast #tegion #thegulftoday

Facebook said Tuesday it now counts two billion active monthly users, as the social giant's founder Mark Zuckerberg highlighted his new mission -- not just connecting people, but helping them find common ground. "As of this morning, the Facebook community is now officially 2 billion people!" Zuckerberg wrote in a post marking the milestone. "We're making progress connecting the world, and now let's bring the world closer together," he wrote. "It's an honor to be on this journey with you." Facebook's announcement came as it works to redefine its purpose, led by Zuckerberg who traveled the US this year to better understand what people want out of the social network. "We realize that we need to do more too," the 33-year-old said in a recent interview with CNN Tech. #facebook #users #happiness #socialmedia #newspages #newsoftheday #world #europe #asia #america #news #2billion #newspages #popular #facebook #markzuckerberg #innovation #connection #hooked #love #addiction #worldwide #milestone #thegulftoday @facebook

Abu Dhabi Police arrested a gang comprising two Arab nationals and an Asian man possessing two million tablets of the drug Captagon estimated at Dhs100 million.

The gang attempted to smuggle the drugs to an adjoining country. The seizures were confiscated to initiate legal procedures against the defendant.

Lieutenant-Colonel Taher Al-Dhaheri, head of the anti-narcotics department at Abu Dhabi Police, revealed that they had received reliable information during the Holy Month of Ramadan reporting that there is a drug shipment inside the country and the owner was searching for a store for this shipment.

A secret agent from the police managed to convince the dealer that he would arrange a place to load the cargo. An ambush was laid to catch the suspects, and they were arrested red-handed. The drugs were hidden inside a truck containing a large gas oven.

The Head of the Anti-narcotic department at Abu Dhabi Police said the inspection process lasted for more than 7 hours. It was completely dismantled until the place of the hidden drugs was found inside the oven. The smugglers placed the Captagon tablets in rectangular pipes under the oven. #drugs #captagon #policeofficer #abudhabi #heroin #addiction #smuggler #arrested #happeningnow #toxic #socialmedia #society #culture #asian #arab #newsoftheday #newspages #storyoftheday #thegulftoday @adpolicehq

At least six people were found dead and over 100 remained missing hours after a massive landslide buried a mountain village in southwest China on Saturday as rescuers frantically scoured through rocks for survivors.

A couple and a baby were rescued and taken to hospital after 62 homes in Xinmo village were swallowed by boulders when the side of a mountain collapsed, according to the Maoxian, or Mao county, government.

The Maoxian government said on its Weibo social media account that six bodies were recovered while 112 people remained missing. State media had earlier revised the number of missing people down from 141 to over 120.

The early morning landslide, which officials believe was triggered by heavy rains, blocked a two-kilometre (one-mile) stretch of river and 1.6 kilometre of road, according to state media.

Rescuers and local residents used ropes to move a boulder while dozens of others, aided by sniffer dogs, searched the rubble for survivors, according to videos posted online by the Maoxian government and state broadcaster CCTV.

Bulldozers and heavy diggers were also deployed to remove boulders, while villagers and soldiers lifted rocks with their bare hands. #china #landslide #residents #rescue #picoftheday #tragedy #horror #death #mourning #love #buried #asia #happeningnow #newsoftheday #newspages #hospital #ambulance #local #army #rescuedog #police #thegulftoday

The rich variety in shapes of the eggs that birds lay -- elliptical, pointy, spherical -- seems to be linked to how well a given bird flies, researchers report.
The study released in the US journal Science stems from the most extensive research yet on a mystery that has flummoxed biologists for centuries. "In contrast to classic hypotheses, we discovered that flight may influence egg shape. Birds that are good fliers tend to lay asymmetric or elliptical eggs," said Mary Caswell Stoddard, a biologist at Princeton University and one of the lead authors of the study.
Another finding is that the flexible inner membrane of the egg, not the hard outshell, is what generates the diversity of eggs out there in nature.
Until now, scientists have put forth a variety of theories about the variety of egg shapes. One says that the place where a bird nests is what determines the egg shape.
This line of thinking held that birds that nest near a cliff often lay eggs that are cone-shaped so that if they roll, they do so in a tight circle and do not fall off the precipice. #study #birds #birdsofinstagram #eggs #eggshape #flight #physiology #behaviour #colours #beauty #science #technology #love #expert #news #newspages #newsoftheday #storyoftheday #picoftheday #birdshape #thegulftoday

An unguarded moment in an interview has renewed speculation over one of contemporary art's great mysteries -- could elusive graffiti activist Banksy be Robert Del Naja of band Massive Attack?
Goldie, a well-known DJ who was a friend and competitor of Del Naja as the two sprayed Bristol in southwest England with graffiti in the 1980s, made an apparent slip of the tongue in an interview this week.
Goldie was speaking with dismay at the high prices that can be fetched for works by Banksy, whose signature style is politically provocative graffiti that appears suddenly on walls around the world. "Give me a bubble letter and put it on a T-shirt and write 'Banksy' on it and we're sorted... We can sell it now," Goldie told the Distraction Pieces podcast. "No disrespect to Rob. I think he is a brilliant artist. I think he has flipped the world of art over," he said, before pausing and switching the conversation to music.

Banksy often produces art in charged political settings. In 2015, the artist painted a mural in the Calais "jungle" of migrants seeking to leave France for Britain.

The work, "The Son of a Migrant from Syria," depicts Apple co-founder Steve Jobs -- who was of Syrian descent -- clutching a bag of belongings and an Apple computer. #banksy #art #painting #graffiti #design #worldbestartists #happeningnow #breakingnews #world #london #bristol #stevejobs #apple #slipofthetongue #england #artistsoninstagram #3d #3dprinting #robertdelnaja #goldie #massiveattack #happeningnow #secret #migrants #art #canavas #newspages #palestine #thegulftoday @banksy

Albert Einstein may have been a genius when it came to the world of physics -- but the magic formula for marriage eluded him, according to letters up for auction at Christie's.

The man behind the theory of relativity was on less solid ground when it came to relationships, according to a series of letters to his lifelong friend and collaborator Michele Besso. "What I admired most in him as a man was the manner in which he managed to live for so long peacefully but also durably with a spouse -- an enterprise in which I piteously failed twice," Einstein wrote to Besso's family on March 21, 1955, just after his friend's death, which preceded his own only by weeks.

In an emotional final paragraph, Einstein wrote of Besso: "Now he has again preceded me a little in parting from this strange world. "This has no importance. For people like us who believe in physics, the separation between past, present and future has only the importance of an admittedly tenacious illusion." Besso provided moral support to his close friend since their student days in Zurich in the 1890s as Einstein endured marital difficulties with first wife Mileva, from whom he separated in 1914.

They divorced in 1919 and he then married his cousin Elsa. #einstein #world #love #marraige #newspages #picoftheday #love #collapse #divorce #scientist #expert #alberteinstein #theoryofrelativity #law #news #letters #thegulftoday #noble #physics #magic #formula #thegulftoday #storyoftheday @christiesinc

As one of the world's largest entertainment companies, Disney is used to adoring fans but one man has topped them all, visiting its California theme park 2,000 days in a row.
Jeff Reitz marked the milestone on Thursday, using his Disneyland Resort annual pass which had enabled his trek to the park on a daily basis since January 1, 2012. "What we mostly know about him is that he loves Disneyland," said John McClintock, a spokesman for the theme park. "When I asked him what he likes about the park, he said he likes all the shows and all the attractions but he did mention that he really likes to listen to the music in the park," he added. "I guess he finds it relaxing." McClintock said Disney has yet to come across someone as enamored with the park as Reitz, an Air Force veteran in his 40s who usually shows up after work and spends a few hours. "His girlfriend frequently comes with him but not every day," he said.
