Frida Kahlo is mainly known for her iconic (self) portraits, often strikingly full of pain and symbolism, colorful Indigenous Mexican elements and a surrealistic vibe.
.
Kahlo had a lot more to offer. Her early work was heavily influenced by European Renaissance painters, before Kahlo turned to the so-called Mexican folk art. Some of the displayed works I could have never identified as Kahlo's! And Frida did lots of beautiful drawings and still lifes as well, like this one titled "Still Life (I belong to Samuel Fastlicht)" from 1951.
.
Some more paintings relate to the 'Neue Sachlichkeit' movement, like one of my favorites called "The Bus" which deals with the heavy traffic accident she had in younger years.
.
On top of that, the exhibition shows how Kahlo - decades after her death - has become omnipresent in today's popular culture and why she continues to serve as a feminist role model.
.
Fun fact: Frida's father was born in Germany.

“The idea is to show that aspects of the industrial world are not rational; that from a rational or functional base, things can become irrational. This irrationality is in the economic structure as well. Each plant produces as much as possible. The plant has to grow to survive. It has to become bigger and more productive. They become bigger because there’s a belief that growth is unlimited, but growth itself is not. And, at the moment when society didn’t need so much iron any more, the plants became even bigger.
In Baltimore, they decided to build the biggest blast furnace in the western world. And then the crisis in steel-making came. They are like dinosaurs. And they have consumed each other.”

The superb 1931 self portrait by the German #neuesachlichkeit photographer #AenneBiermann. Sadly she died of liver disease just two years later at the age of 34.

The New Objectivity: still feels new, not so sure about the “objectivity.” 😂
