Our time visiting the Taos Pueblo was beautiful, and touched us with grief.
We were faced with, yet again, the unfolding story of colonization and imperialism against those who remember how to be human beings.
A peculiar reflection struck us as we were driving through the densely forested Pueblo road: what would it look like if anytime we enter native land were asked for our passport and identification? .
We move through stolen indigenous lands with unconscious domination behaviors, similar to the ways I've seen some Americans confidently walking through streets in southern Italy.
We have forgotten that we are guests, here.
We have forgotten courtesy, permission, and relationship that requires consent before proceeding. .
These sandy lands were a beautiful reminder of the telling of a story of survival, and the rise and fall of empires.
Our guide, a young Pueblo woman majoring in chemistry, was kind enough to take our question and respond in a way our white minds could understand the answers.
