Tronco encefálico + Pares Craneales V, VII, VII IX, X y XI. 💀

The brain has 86 billion neurons, and nobody understands how they all work. But scientists are still attempting to build a brain-computer interface that could outpace evolution. Read "Mind Control" from our December issue at the link in our bio.

Beautiful retinal microphotography by @sam.i.esteves For clinicians that may be confused with the orientation of the image, here's a curious explanation. Basic scientists by convention place the pigment epithelium on the top and the ganglion cell nerve fibers on the bottom. Clinicians usually orient retinal images the opposite way, with the pigment epithelium at the bottom. Add this to one of the reasons we cannot communicate easily between the clinical and basic scientists. Another typical barrier between us is meeting schedules. Basic scientists love to have meetings during lunch, whereas us clinicians like to meet early before surgery or late after clinic. Perhaps these unscheduled instagram posts help get us collaborating more!

Submitted my paper ✔️
Now back on the scope!

Picured here is a cross section of the retina. The highlighted cells are my fav: Starburst Amacrine Cells! These cells are tuned to respond to movement in specific directions giving us the ability to perceive objects in motion.

💫It’s Thanksgiving in New Zealand today. They obviously don’t celebrate it here, but I’m still thinking of all the things I’m thankful for. The experience here has been simple, yet significant & a reminder for me of how far I have come. For those of you who have known me for years, you know that at one point in my life I wasn’t exactly a good person. Not because I didn’t want to be, but because experiences shaped my behaviors and influenced me to believe that “this is all that I was capable of”. I remember sitting in jail thinking “this is it for me”. The endless nights of drug use, the alcohol binges I would go on, the people I would take advantage of, the poor decisions I would make, and the lack of effort I would put into bettering myself. At one point, the probability that I wouldn’t be here today was much higher than the probability that I would make something of myself. Throughout that time, I met some people that saw things that I didn’t see, and encouraged me to see the bigger picture. One of these people told me something that stuck with me, “It’s never too late to be the person you want to be.” That saying along side those people, changed me. Moving to Denver was one of the best things that could have happened to me because it influenced a new beginning in a positive environment. I could be anyone I wanted to be. Today, I tell this story to my friends and family that I have met in Colorado and they cant believe it. I am a much different person now... but I still have behaviors and parts of my past that show up from time to time. I have a tendency to beat myself up when I get a glimpse of that, but then I use it as reminder of how far I’ve come. I would never change what I’ve been through in my life time because without it, I wouldn’t have the perspective I have today about life. For that, I am thankful. For the people that have believed in me along the way, I am SO thankful for you. For those of you who doubt their abilities, it’s never too late to be the person you want to be. 💫

#DanceBreak anyone 🕺🏾
As a teacher sometimes it's essential to CLOSE the #BOOKS & TURN UP the & #MUSIC & demand everyone to get up and #DANCE.
💃🏾🕺🏾👯
It's more than a #brainBreak
It's a zap to the #neurons to rejuvenate the #mind and body. To drift from the feeling of mediocrity to the inkling of hope that creates the feeling of "I CAN DO THIS!"
💃🏾
It's more than a #brain break it's that shot of #dopamine that our students need to believe that #school can be an exciting place for #growth to take place!
