Stem cell scientists & enthusiasts mark your calendars for #StemCellAwarenessDay on October 11th!
This day honors the importance of stem cell research for advancing the development of treatments and cures for patients. SCAD was started by California's stem cell agency, @cirm_stemcells, back in 2009 and proclaimed by former California Mayor Gavin Newsom. Every year, we share a list of SCAD events in on the CIRM website so be sure to check them out! (CIRM.ca.gov/stemcellawarenessday)
Some of you might ask why this important day isn't celebrated on October 4th in honor of the OCT4 gene, which is essential for maintaining stem cell pluripotency. Well, the answer is not all stem cells are pluripotent! Your body contains many different types of adult #stemcells that are limited in what types of cells they can become and tissues they can make. We don't want those stem cells to feel left out do we? 🤓
TBH I'm going to celebrate stem cells on both days this year! Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for OCT4 & SCAD celebrations by following the #OCT4 #pluripotency & #stemcellawarenessday hashtags on Instagram and Twitter!
