Referred vs. Radicular Pain!

Pain is not simply just pain😱! Pain is a very complex process that our brains experience. 🧐
.
One of the greatest challenges that health care providers face, is finding the SOURCE of the patient’s pain and understanding what type of pain the patient is experiencing. .
For instance, a patient may feel pain in their arm💪🏼 but the damage to their tissue may be from their shoulder. This is just a simple example of the challenges health care providers face when assessing their patients.

Being able to understand and distinguish the type of pain you are experiencing will not only help you be in tuned with your body, but also help in your rehabilitation.
.
💢Referred pain tends to be pain that is less focal and contained to a general area. It is usually close to the source of the pain. This type of pain is often associated with trigger points, which are small knots in your muscles. This type of pain is usually dull and aching, often deep and steady. The pain can be present at rest or with movement. Referred pain can result in complaints such as: muscle aches, headaches, low back pain, jaw pain, or even mimic symptoms like carpal tunnel syndrome.

⚡️Radicular pain is usually associated with nerve pain. This type of pain starts in one place and travels to another, usually along the path of the affected nerve. Radicular pain can feel like pins and needles💉📍, burning🔥, electric shock along the pathway of the nerve, and/or tingling (little ants 🐜crawling along the nerve). If you suffer from this type of pain, it is most commonly constant with altered skin sensations at rest or with movement. This pain is caused by a nerve irritation/impingement from:
💢Disc herniations
💢Degenerative joints
💢Spinal stenosis
💢Spastic muscle
💢Trauma
The classical example of radicular pain is sciatica. If you irritate your sciatic nerve, it causes an electric/burning pain that shoots down your buttock and down your leg to your toes.

Whenever you feel pain, take a deep breath and really think about what you’re experiencing. Ask yourself: Am I feeling an electric shock, dull ache, or burning type of pain?

NERVES- NOT JUST FOR PAIN:
Guys, of all of the nerves in the body, only 10% ‼️‼️of the nerve fibers comprise PAIN fibers, with the other 90% utilizing the motor and sensory functions of the body.  It is very common for many of my patients who present to my office to be surprised and even shocked when we uncover that the “pain that started last week” has actually been building inside and getting progressively worse over the last few months, even years, prior to the appearance of pain.
Like an onion, we then begin to peel back the layers, addressing one compensatory issue after the other until we are able to focus solely on the root cause of the problem and thus, able to give the patient the resolution, not simply “the band-aid”, for their problem. ✳️NOTE:  When it comes to nerve irritation and inflammation, look for other symptoms, NOT JUST PAIN, such as:
✅muscle tightness and soreness, ✅quicker fatigue when engaging in physical activity, ✅changes in system functions like indigestion or bowel movements, ✅numbness and tingling in the hands or the feet.
These signs could be an early signal that something is irritating the nervous system and thus causing a disturbance to the proper nerve flow in the body, so be sure to be aware of your body’s signals for help and save yourself the hardship of the detrimental effects of chronic stress to the nervous system.

This #patient was at her #personaltrainer last week when he noticed the unusual presentation of her spinal segments. The picture on the left was taken last week by her trainer. Today, I treated her spine and took the picture on the right at the end of her session with me. #Alignment of the spine is essential for the intrinsic #muscles of the #spine to #workproperly. The small muscles between the #vertebrae carefully guide and direct the spinal segments as we move. When the segments are not moving properly, the #joints and #nerves will become #inflamed. #Jointcartilage will break down and #nerveirritation will cause #musclespasms.
