BLOG POST: Yesterday I played golf with one of my neighbours.
It is something we do when we can find some time and coordinate our diaries.
We have a routine that we follow which we both like. We chat in the car on the way to golf and catch up on one another, our families, work etc. Play some pretty average golf spiced with plenty of laughs. Head off for a coffee and further catch up. And head home and work out a time for our next game.
But this is the stuff of community. This is the stuff of neighbourhood. This is the stuff that means when we head off for a few days, we can ask with confidence... "Can you feed the cat (or dog, mice, goldfish etc.)?" "Keep an eye on the house / apartment?" And the smiles and the waves when you pass one another make sense. And the small conversations when you bump into one another at the supermarket are fun.
Having / being good neighbours makes life go easier. For them, and for us.
It doesn't mean that you have to live in each others pockets. Spend all your time together. But you do need to know who they are. At least enough to have a meaningful 3 minute conversation.
So, have you taken the time to reach out next door yet?
