When the clocks change back from Daylight Savings Time, some people find it a struggle to get back into a sleep routine and end up feeling tired for days, if not weeks. Here are some tips to help with the adjustment:⠀

1) Change your clocks before you go to bed and wake up at your normal time. This will help your brain and your body get into a new pattern. Also, try to get a good night's sleep tonight. Don't use the "extra" hour to stay up late.⠀

2) Eat well, stay hydrated and make sure you get some exercise tomorrow. Exercise helps the body to adjust to different time zones and it can help with the end of DST as well. Try to get outdoors and get some exposure to natural light. This will also help reset your sleep/wake cycle. ⠀

3) Get a good night's sleep tomorrow night as well. If you typically struggle with time changes, try a few things to help your body relax and sleep. Limit your screen time tomorrow night, take a warm bath with epsom salts to relax and try a bedtime tea with some mild herbs to encourage sleep. Make sure your room is dark, quiet and cool.⠀

If you keep this up for a few days, your body will adjust quickly and you will be back to feeling like your normal self in no time. ⠀

What's for breakfast? Oats, banana and ground flaxseeds. I have started eating flaxseeds more regularly lately. They are a great source of fiber and omega 3s but they also contain lignans - plant compounds that help to balance out estrogen levels in the body. Flaxseeds have also been shown to protect against certain cancers and reduce your risk of heart disease. You can sprinkle them on salad, oats, cereal and yogurt or throw them in a smoothie and add them to your baked goods. I like to freshly grind mine but you can find pre-ground flaxmeal at the healthfood store. Just make sure they are vacuum packed and in the fridge to ensure the best quality. ⠀

Basil is one of my favorite herbs. It is so fragrant and contains at least 6 different healing essential oils and is also high in anti-oxidants and vitamins. It has been shown to be anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and helps the body manage stress (an adaptogen). If you are feeling a little anxious through the day or having trouble sleeping at night, try this relaxing breathing exercise. It acts like a natural tranquilizer by calming the nervous system. If you can't hold your breath for a count of 7, that is okay. Work your way up there. Start by doing these breaths a few times and increase the number of repetitions as you get better at it.⠀

Since January of 2012, I have worked to build Sage Naturopathic Clinic in Kitchener into a reliable, trustworthy wellness clinic where patients can seek quality care and be surrounded by practitioners that care and listen. Looking for a healthy snack? Walnuts are high in anti-oxidants and they are a good source of copper, manganese, biotin and molybdenum. They also contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega 3 fatty acid, that has been shown to be good for the heart. Like all nuts, they are high in calories to try to limit intake to a handful a day:)⠀
