2017: It was the end of the year & I decided I was ready for a new beginning. I was tired of the long, straight pieces of the ends of my hair. I was tired of my styles not coming out right because my heat damage was so apparent. I decided I was going to big chop & go into the new year with a lot less dead weight. Since I’m horrible at cutting into a style, I decided to go to a professional to have my big chop done because I still wanted my hair to be in a style I could rock. —-
So, I scheduled my appointment with @originalmoxie to have it done...the experience was quite an interesting one. As I sat in the chair & watched so much of my dead hair fall to the ground, it was both terrifying & liberating. I knew it was for the better but I was also sad about losing so much length. I also worried about how I was going to rock a short cut. When I was done & I turned around my chair to look at the final result, I almost didn’t recognize myself. I looked so different. It definitely took me some time to adjust but I ended up loving it! My hair felt so much lighter!
I think the big chop parallels so much in life. You know there are things you want to do that you never have & you feel like it’s the right decision but you’re afraid. It’s new. It’s scary. You don’t really know how you’ll adjust...but you just have to do it anyway. Do it afraid because you’ll figure it out. You will adjust. You will adapt. And you never know what beautiful things you’ll discover in the process. I can’t even hold you up, this journey has definitely not always been easy. So many days, I feel like my hair is just not cooperating but I’ve learned so much about my hair & myself. I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. Just keep going. It will get better. I’m amazed at how far my hair has come.
This is really a “starter big chop” since there was still some heat damage, especially in the front. We cut a lot off but decided to cut more off little by little so it was a less drastic change. I’ve cut off a lot more since this picture but this was the cut that really started me on my path down this natural hair journey. It’s one for the books!
