I wish everyone held respect for native cultures - the people, their beliefs, and their land. Especially towards what's believed as sacred. Someone who is not of a specific culture is in no position to say what should or shouldn't be sacred. Just because a culture is ancient, doesn't mean it lacks intelligence. In fact, the only reason why these ancient cultures survived through time is because of their depth of knowledge that keeps people connected to the their surroundings, each other, and the life their living. If someone is a political leader of a Hawaiian island, dedicating their life to the local people (including those of Hawaiian ancestry), wouldn't we expect/trust this person to have respect for the indigenous culture? I would think so. But apparently the mayor of Maui doesn't agree with what Hawaiians view as sacred - in particular, nature. He also seems to think natives defending their cultural beliefs are "political wannabes." Something's not right with this picture. .
