For our holiday offering to friends, the NM exhibits anew Alcuaz's stunning Art Protis.
National Artist Federico Aguilar Alcuaz's Art Protis (non-woven tapestries) goes on show at the National Museum of Fine Arts. One of the well-known masterworks of the artist from the collection of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), these have come from a unique process developed in Brno, the second biggest city of the Czech Republic.
This facet of his career started when he met a Czech artist (little is known of his identity today) in 1970 who introduced him to the newly created Art Protis textile collage technique of non-woven tapestry, compelling Alcuaz to create his own. Art Protis-making took place in the premises of Vlněna textile company in Brno.
In this set of 22 Art Protis, Alcuaz made art in an unusual manner, creating the non-woven tapestries by first preparing the wool which comes in raw sheets dyed in different colors. He would then cut pieces, some of which he placed on top of one another like a collage. The finished layers were then pressed through a machine and woven together into a fabric.
The Art Protis on exhibition represents work from 1970 to 1980, conceived and designed by Alcuaz in Brno, Barcelona and Manila and eventually brought to Vlněna factory in Brno for execution. His audacious view of art making, resulting in expressing his perspectives on reevaluating art, continues to be admired by his peers and followers. In these Art Protis, Alcuaz mastered creating a painterly abstraction with an unusual medium. Having lost primacy over many decades, Art Protis is now seeing a revival and have the makings of gaining popularity among contemporary artists and new audiences.
The exhibition will run from December 15, 2017 to May 27, 2018. Museum hours are from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm daily except on Mondays and some Holidays. For more information, please call (02) 5271219 or email email@example.com.
