We're celebrating National Library Week and yesterday's National Bookmobile day with this image of the Huntsville Library's bookmobile, circa 1940. At the time the bookmobile service brought library materials to rural Madison county and beyond. Pictured in front of the bookmobile are (from left to right): city council member James E. Davis, library board member Mrs. Claude Davis, Roy L. Stone, County Commission Chairman, and Mrs. Elizabeth Parks Beamguard, library director. Mrs. Beamguard was Huntsville's first librarian who was formally trained in librarianship. She went on to become the director of the Alabama Public Library Service. The Huntsville-Madison County Library System is the oldest library in the state of Alabama and is celebrating its 200th year this year!
