Every year since 1996, in connection with the Summer Solstice on June 21st, Canada has celebrated National Aboriginal Day. It is a day for the country to collectively acknowledge and honour the unique and diverse culture, heritage and accomplishments of First Nations, Metis, Inuit and urban Indigenous people. There are more than 1.5 million people in Canada who identify as Indigenous, representing the youngest Canadian demographic.⠀

The history of Indigenous people is Canada's history and while we acknowledge many wrongs that have been done over the course of that history, we are committed to working towards a new history, one that will be based on healing, understanding, respect, and collaboration.⠀

The culture of many Indigenous communities in Canada is intrinsically tied to the sea, relying on the ocean not only for food but for spiritual and traditional connection. ⠀

Before she identifies as Canadian, photographer Nadya Kwandibens (@_anishinaabekwe) identifies as Anishinaabe. “I’m an Anishinaabe woman and an Anishinaabe artist,” she says. “In Canada, native people belong to different nations that are indigenous to this continent, which is known as Turtle Island. The Anishinaabe — which translates to ‘the people’ in our language — are just one of the many indigenous nations here.” Nadya lives on Anishinaabe land in northwestern Ontario, and her ancestors have called what is now Canada home for over 10,000 years.
Nadya started Red Works Photography (@_redworks) to empower herself and other First Nations people through portraits, event photography and workshops. “By focusing on the strength and vibrancy that our people have, we’re changing that way that society sees indigenous people,” she says. “It’s important that my artistic practice shed light on the fact that indigenous stories have been largely silenced during most of Canada’s colonial history. But there is more willingness to make room for dialogue and collective understanding. I’m hopeful about our future.” #NationalAboriginalDay

Did you know that today is National Native American Day ... yet it's also Columbus Day? How does that work? Let us celebrate Aboriginals but also celebrate that Columbus ventured to the Caribbean and started the expedition to murder, sell, and rape the Indigenous People of the Caribbean? Oh ... *

This is a clip from episode 1 season 4 of Black-ish. The episode was about the great traveller Columbus and the real history behind him. *

"Birth of a Family" tells the story of three sisters and a brother who were adopted as infants into separate families across North America during Canada's infamous Sixties Scoop. Now in middle age, they meet together for the first time and spend a week in Banff, sharing stories about their lives and struggles as foster kids and adoptees.
