"To be a designer today is to be an entrepreneur. Whether you're a two-man operation in Shoreditch or a 3,000-person, vertically integrated brand, you need to have the wherewithal to run your business through investment, considering everything from start-up funds to your exit plan or what it takes to go public." - Natalie Massenet
Dame Natalie Sara Massenet, DBE, is a fashion entrepreneur from the United States. She started her life having a journalist father and model mother, spending most of her younger years in France. When she was 11 her parents decided to get divorded. After she graduated she decided to spend a year in Tokyo, wokring as a model just like her mother. One little known fact about Natalie is that she was once a receptionist for Universal Studios.
Her calling in life, however, was always fashion. In 2000 she founded her company Net-a-Porter, which was a London based fashion magazine. She raised a staggering £1.2m start-up costs with the help of her then husband. By 2004, only 4 years on, the company made profit and won the Best Fashion Shop Award at the British Fashion Awards. She has shown us that you should never give up on your passions or dreams, they could eventually turn into your career.
