L-14! (“L” as in “Launch”!) If @nasa’s Mars InSight Lander isn’t yet on your radar, you have 2 weeks to get excited about this highly-anticipated (and first-ever!) interplanetary launch from the West Coast! I’ll be at Vandenberg Air Force Base, 30th Space Wing, to witness this historic launch in person(!) on May 5. In the meantime, if you’re in SF, catch the Mars InSight Roadshow at the @exploratorium through Sunday, April 22. And watch this space + my Twitter account for updates from the launch site as liftoff approaches.

Our Poets are on a visit to the NASA Jet Propulsion Labratory today. We trained them on professional attire, asking questions, and presenting their 30 second commercial. Their curiosity is equipped with preparedness on this trip to infinity. 💼🌠

From 1 to 10 how beautiful this picture of saturn is?

The rings of saturn that we see today are only 100 million years old and were formed when dinosaurs were roaming earth!

The brightly reflective moon Enceladus
appears before Saturn's rings while the larger moon Titan looms in the distance. Jets of water ice and vapor emanating from the south pole of Enceladus (hinting at subsurface sea rich in organics), and liquid
hydrocarbons ponding on the surface on the surface of Titan make these two of the most fascinating moons in the Saturnian system. Enceladus (313 miles, or 504 kilometers across) is in the center of the image. Titan (3,200 miles, or 5,150 kilometers across) can faintly be seen in the background beyond the rings. This view looks toward the anti-Saturn side of Enceladus and the Saturn-facing side of Titan. The northern, sunlit side of the rings is seen from just above the ringplane

Fifty years ago today, Apollo 6 launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The uncrewed Apollo 6 mission was the final qualification flight of the Saturn V launch vehicle and the Apollo spacecraft. The primary objectives of the mission were to demonstrate structural and thermal integrity and compatibility of the launch vehicle and spacecraft, confirm launch loads and dynamic characteristics, and verify stage separations, propulsion, guidance and control, electrical systems, emergency detection system, and mission support facilities and operations, including Command Module recovery. Pictured here is the Apollo 6 launch vehicle as it leaves Kennedy’s Vehicle Assembly Building on the transporter heading to launch pad 39-A.

Three views of ’s moon Titan show how different the same place can look in various wavelengths of light, above and beneath the shroud of the giant moon’s atmosphere. These images came from ’s Cassini mission in 2005. More: saturn.jpl.nasa.gov #Saturn’s #NASA’s #science #nature

Today's Throwback Thursday takes us back to April, 1972. Astronaut Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot, is photographed collecting lunar samples at Station No. 1, during the first Apollo 16 extravehicular activity (EVA), at the Descartes landing site. This picture, looking eastward, was taken by astronaut John W. Young, commander. Duke is standing at the rim of Plum Crater. The parked Lunar Roving Vehicle  can be seen in the left background.
