Minggu ini para benda langit akan menampakkan diri di Indonesia.
Mutoha, penggiat Jogja Astro Club, mengatakan fenomena langit terjadi pada minggu ini.
Hal ini senada dengan yang dikatakan oleh Marufin Sudibyo, seorang penulis di situs langit selatan.
Marufin berkata kemarin, 19 Oktober 2017, Uranus akan menampakkan diri sepanjang malam. "Uranus dapat dilihat sepanjang malam dengan mata telanjang," ujar Marufin melalui pesan singkat.

Pada 21-22 Oktober 2017, di langit Indonesia juga akan terlihat hujan meteor mayor.
Hujan meteor ini disebut dengan Orionids. "Orionids kali ini cukup bagus, karena selain malam Minggu, langit tidak terganggu cahaya bulan karena fase bulan baru," kata Mutoha.

Hujan meteor ini bisa disaksikan mulai dari tengah malam hingga subuh. Orionids kali ini kira-kira akan menampakkan 15-20 meteor setiap jam.  Dia juga mengingatkan bahwa salah satu syarat untuk melihat fenomena langit adalah kecerahan cuaca saat itu berlangsung.
Selain itu, hujan meteor akan lebih mudah dilihat di langit gelap.
Inilah mengapa kampanye langit gelap atau "Globe at Night" diciptakan. Tujuannya untuk membangun kesadaran mengenai pentingnya kondisi langit gelap dan efek dari polusi cahaya perkotaan terhadap astronomi.
Sebagai penutup, tanggal 24 Oktober 2017 juga ada konjungsi bulan dan Saturnus di langit barat. Fenomena ini bisa dilihat mulai dari matahari terbenam hingga jam 9 malam.

Meski bisa dilihat dengan mata telanjang, tetapi Mutoha menyarankan melihatnya dengan teleskop. "Dengan teleskop lebih bagus karena bisa melihat kawah bulan dan cincin saturnus," tuturnya.

Packed inside its canister, the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) for NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket passes by the Vehicle Assembly Building on its way to the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The ICPS is the first integrated piece of flight hardware to arrive for the SLS. It is the in-space stage that is located toward the top of the rocket, between the Launch Vehicle Stage Adapter and the Orion Spacecraft Adapter. It will provide some of the in-space propulsion during Orion's first flight test atop the SLS on Exploration Mission-1.

This image, captured by Hubble, shows what happens when two galaxies become one. The twisted cosmic knot seen here is NGC 2623 — or Arp 243 — and is located about 250 million light-years away in the constellation of Cancer (The Crab). NGC 2623 gained its unusual and distinctive shape as the result of a major collision and subsequent merger between two separate galaxies. This violent encounter caused clouds of gas within the two galaxies to become compressed and stirred up, in turn triggering a sharp spike of star formation. This active star formation is marked by speckled patches of bright blue; these can be seen clustered both in the center and along the trails of dust and gas forming NGC 2623’s sweeping curves (known as tidal tails). These tails extend for roughly 50 000 light-years from end to end. Many young, hot, newborn stars form in bright stellar clusters — at least 170 such clusters are known to exist within NGC 2623.

NGC 2623 is in a late stage of merging. It is thought that the Milky Way will eventually resemble NGC 2623 when it collides with our neighboring galaxy, the Andromeda Galaxy, in 4 billion years’ time.

The giant black hole at the center of the Milky Way may be producing mysterious particles called neutrinos. If confirmed, this would be the first time that scientists have traced neutrinos back to a black hole.

The evidence for this came from three NASA satellites that observe in X-ray light: the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Swift gamma-ray mission, and the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). Neutrinos are tiny particles that carry no charge and interact very weakly with electrons and protons. Unlike light or charged particles, neutrinos can emerge from deep within their cosmic sources and travel across the universe without being absorbed by intervening matter or, in the case of charged particles, deflected by magnetic fields.

The Earth is constantly bombarded with neutrinos from the sun. However, neutrinos from beyond the solar system can be millions or billions of times more energetic. Scientists have long been searching for the origin of ultra-high energy and very high-energy neutrinos.

Neutrinos pass through material very easily, it is extremely difficult to build detectors that reveal exactly where the neutrino came from. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, located under the South Pole, has detected 36 high-energy neutrinos since the facility became operational in 2010.

By pairing IceCube’s capabilities with the data from the three X-ray telescopes, scientists were able to look for violent events in space that corresponded with the arrival of a high-energy neutrino here on Earth.

Chandra witnessed the biggest outburst ever detected from Sagittarius A*, the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole.

Scientists think that the highest energy neutrinos were created in the most powerful events in the Universe like galaxy mergers, material falling onto supermassive black holes, and the winds around dense rotating stars called pulsars.
The team of researchers is still trying to develop a case for how Sagittarius A* might produce neutrinos. One idea is that it could happen when particles around the black hole are accelerated by a shock wave, like a sonic boom, that produces charged particles that decay to neutrinos.

Nei giorni precedenti la fine della sua lunga esplorazione nel sistema di Saturno, a sonda Cassini ha inviato a Terra un gran numero di dati tuttora al vaglio degli scienziati. Alcuni studi preliminari sono stati presentati nel corso dell'annuale meeting dell’American Astronomical Society Division for Planetary Science (15-20 ottobre 2017): in particolare quelli sugli anelli di Saturno, che sono stati osservati da distanza ravvicinata durante gli ultimi passaggi radenti, quando la sonda transitava tra l'atmosfera esterna e gli anelli più vicini.Un gruppo di ricerca si è soffermato su quelle formazioni degli anelli chiamate eliche: si tratta di sbuffi delle particelle che compongono gli anelli, creati da piccoli satelliti, alcuni tanto piccoli da essere invisibili, che producono però delle perturbazioni nel piano degli anelli stessi.Matt Tiscareno ritiene che Cassini sia riuscita a fotografare tutte le eliche, e da una distanza estremamente ravvicinata: sarebbero in totale sei, chiamate con i nomi di aviatori che hanno fatto la storia: Blériot, Earhart, Santos-Dumont, Sikorsky, Post e Quimby. Le immagini permetteranno di capire meglio come si formano e come sono alimentate. Una questione sempre molto interessante riguarda le forze che tengono uniti gli anelli di Saturno: per la maggior parte delle ipotesi correnti gli anelli dovrebbero dissolversi, e anche in tempi relativamente brevi. Dal momento che non succede deve esserci una “forza” che li tiene uniti. Si era ipotizzato che fossero le lune Mimas e Janus a creare le condizioni che tengono al loro posto i granuli di ghiaccio degli anelli denominati “B” e “A”.
Sulla base dei nuovi dati giunti da Cassini, Radwan Tajeddine (Cornell University, New York) ha però elaborato un nuovo modello del sistema di Saturno, nel quale gli anelli sono tenuti sotto controllo dall'intera confederazione di lune, da Pan ad Atlas, da Prometeo a Pandora fino a Janus
