(México) When you grow up in a country where being a womxn is dangerous, where the drugculture (narcocultura) is strong, many men in Mexico think that it is very romantic to tell me,
"Ay no! Is cuz I would really like to steal you!" "Mi'ja, what do you think if I go to your house and kidnap you? 😉" "If you don't wanna go with me right now, someday I am gonna appear at your house and take you with me."
Men, mi'jo, this is not flirting, this is a threat. Mexico's current situation is not in the condition for you to joke around like this--to romanticize this.
Every time a man tells me this, it never stops surprising me the smile with which they say this, how casual they sound, the normality and how easily it seems for them to kidnap or steal a womxn.
And it worries me that these dudes have used the same pick-up line on other girls because, if they are telling me this, they have probably said it before, and it probably worked, which means that there are many womxn out there that think this is normal... That this is "cute."
And many of us know how this "romantic kidnappings" usually end up.
People, in Mexico we are being killed.
And yeah, this is one of the reasons why I am not going to the holly fairs in my hometown (Tóliman, Jalisco, México) this August.
Les gustó tanto mi alegria que me la quitaron.
