Someone recently asked me what is the 80/20 Rule. Knowing and understanding limits and boundaries for your child's sleep will ensure that they are well rested and avoid an accumulation of a sleep debt.
I want you to know that just because your a parent does NOT mean that you are a slave to your child's sleep schedule. BUT if you take advantage of not protecting their sleep at least 80% of the time, you run the risk of having an overtired child, which can spiral into new habits, crutches, and dig a deep hole that can take extra time and patience to get out of!
So 80/20 Rule: 80% of the time, stick to your child's routine as best as you can. This means naptimes, crib sleep, bedtimes AND wake times. This will keep things running smoothly.
...however, I know that as a parent we need some flexibility. This is where the 20% comes in. So, 20% of the time you can vary. This may be a skipped nap, carseat or stroller nap (or carrier as seen in my #tbt pic hiking in Banff, Alberta), or later bedtime. Get back on track asap with an earlier bedtime or hoping onto the next sleep time and continuing on with the schedule like nothing happened. ♡
Having this flexibility is GREAT! It teaches your babe to be resilient with their sleep and how to follow your lead!
So be a great teacher! Have fun! Don't get stuck. Parenthood is a fun ride, don't let it weigh you down. Explore with your little people and make amazing memories. Get amazing sleep! 💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤
