For the last five and a half years, I have been a nanny to two young girls. For their privacy, I've never shared much of our world or photos of them. The older they got, the more they tested my patience. But my God, I have never had a better job. To call it a job is a disservice. It's the happiest and most fulfilled I've ever been. I was there when they started to crawl and then walk. I was there for their first words. I was there for their obsession with dinosaurs and cars and reading and dancing and singing and going to the movies and museums and the zoo and parks. I taught them sign language and all about space and the cha cha slide. They loved my dogs. They were flower girls in my wedding. To take care of them and watch them grow has been so incredible and I'm so thankful their parents trusted me to care for them. Tomorrow is my last day with them because they start kindergarten next week. And I am not handling it well. They've become my family. We've all promised to see each other as often as possible, but with new jobs and school, I know it will be hard. I have to keep reminding myself that good ol' adage, 'dont cry because it's over, smile because it happened.' But there are going to be lots of tears the next couple of days. My heart is hurting.
