Hello beautiful people!

This November, I’ll be running the NYC Marathon to raise money for the National Alliance for Mental Illness, or NAMI @naminyc_metro

NAMI has been an important community for my family. In 2010, my brother Christopher was placed in the mental health system after experiencing complications from a brain surgery he hoped would reduce his seizures due to epilepsy. The resulting brain injury has affected all of our lives in ways we could not have imagined. He is currently in his third facility, one that is finally more adequately equipped to address his needs. But the road to get him there has been long.

As my family and I have tried to help my brother navigate the healthcare system to get the care he needs, NAMI has been there to answer our questions, listen to our frustrations, and help advise on productive steps forward in a complicated and severely overburdened system.

They are also a terrific community that I have come to love. I’ve been volunteering in their NYC office for the past two years and have met some amazing people there. I’ve seen them in action, and I truly believe that this organization saves lives.
Please join me in supporting @naminyc_metro

Is this my reaction to grilling all the meats over an open flame on an island in the middle of an Alpine lake for people I love? Or is it my reaction to having raised a quarter of my fundraising goal within a week of me launching my campaign for team NAMI-NYC at the @nycmarathon this November?!
Definitely the first one, but I'm v stoked about the latter😁😎🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

"It’s important for me to share my story to reach other Black men, and other Black families.  To let them know that mental illness is as real and devastating as racism.  It’s as emotionally deteriorating.  And if it’s unchecked and untreated, it eclipses any hope for recovery." - Larry Bryant . . . . .

“Good afternoon, thank you for calling the NAMI-NYC Helpline. My name is Rocco, how may I help you?” This is how many calls from individuals living with mental illness, or a family member/caregiver of someone living with mental health challenges, begin. Whether seeking info about a NAMI-NYC service, a referral to another city resource, or just support, valuable volunteers like Rocco are here, ready for your call.

Call the NAMI-NYC Helpline between 11-6p Monday-Thursday (11-2p Fridays during the summer) at 212-684-3264 or email helpline@naminyc.org.

Mental health conditions do not discriminate.  Anyone can experience the challenges of mental illness, regardless of their background.  However, background and identity can make access to mental health treatment much more difficult. National Minority Mental Health Month was established in 2008 to address this disparity. July is #MinorityMentalHealthMonth. . . . .

A small pause from @gourmadela entertainment today for a very important cause! May is #MentalHealthAwarness month and this morning, I proudly participated (in the pouring rain 🌧!) and fundraised for #NAMIWalks (I did the #NAMIruns of course 🏃🏻‍♀️😅) - the largest and most successful #mentalhealth #fundraising and awareness event in the United States. 👍
I cannot claim that I know what it is to suffer from mental illness, but I’ve known and love many people who can. 1 in 5 Americans each year is affected by a diagnosable mental health condition and/or personality disorder, whether they know it or not, and 1 in 17 lives with a serious mental illness. The reality is, mental illness can affect every single one of us. In addition to a person's directly experiencing it, family, friends and communities are also impacted. And while there has been increased awareness in the recent years, there is still a strong ignorance, incomprehension and #stigma around mental illness. The social and self-stigma is labeled as the greatest barrier to care, with sufferers shamed into fear and silence, preventing them from having hope and seeking help. But there’s good news! ☝️ Stigma is 100% curable! 🙌 Increased awareness is one of the most important things that can be done to counteract the stereotypes around mental health. The perception of mental illness won’t change unless we act to change it. Compassion, empathy and understanding are the antidote. 💞 We can all participate in taking the #stigmafree pledge, raise awareness and #CureStigma. A special thank you to all those who have participated and donated for this important cause! 😘❤️ #thefutureisstigmafree
