Tip #5: This is probably the most common mistake beginners do. As they try to keep their balance when standing up, they bend the upper body down to bring it closer to the surfboard.
In most cases, surfers end up falling off their surfboard in front of them.

I can’t do it anymore, I gotta move ocean side.

Tip #4: Keep your knees bent and your lower body compressed down.

After standing up for the first time, unbend knees and throw your hands in the air. As soon as your legs are straight, it becomes very hard to keep your balance and you will most probably fall quickly.

Another very common mistake is to bring your knees in front of your surfboard. It's a bad habit in the long term for bigger, steeper waves that don’t give you much time to pop up

Tip #2: This is a typical “protection reflex”. As you catch a wave, you might put your hands in front of you on the surfboard, unconsciously trying to protect yourself. It’s impossible to do a pop up with your hands in front of the board. Keep them under your pectorals.

If you're naturally competitive and likes the pressure, clubs can help your surfing a lot because you'll try crazier stuff and put yourself in positions that you wouldn't put yourself in when freesurfing.

As confronting as it can be, watch footage of yourself at least once a month. Think about what looked good, how it felt and how to do that again!

Remember to be the best you can be, surfers! 🌊
