Raising the flag at Wounded Knee ✊🏽🏴 Based on the WW2 photograph "Raising the Flag at Iwo Jima", and dedicated to my fellow first Nations people
In 1973, members of the American Indian Movement occupied the town of Wounded Knee, the site of the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre where 300 Sioux men, women, and children were brutally murdered by the U.S 7th cavalry.
The Federal government and armed AIM members exchanged gunfire over the course of 71 days of occupation. Two Sioux men were shot to death while many others were severely wounded.
This, among many other important events in the indigenous community are normally not taught about, recent and historical alike. Let's change that ✊🏽A'ho
