Yoga got me doing things I thought I'd never be able to do. Another breakthrough with the two hand grip on this pose woohoo!!! 😍 Getting a full flip grip has gotta be one of the hardest motions to achieve with asanas, but once you got it everything else seems to fall into place. As you know my left shoulder can be very stubborn but it seems to be improving a lot!
It's crazy how I am more flexible now as a yogi than when I was a competitive dancer. There is a WORLDS difference with how yoga trains you vs dance, or at least that's how it used to be! In dance it was just all about getting your leg closer to your head(more pain the better), but yoga is much more focused on alignment and safety, and thus my flexibility improved tenfold over time. The concept of "inhale and lengthen, exhale and go deeper" is something I feel the dance world would benefit greatly from. Not to hold one superior over the other at all, but I feel the techniques I've learned from yoga are much more effective in the long run ❤️

“Just Breathe.” 🌬 .

The only time I consciously think about breathing is when I’m upside down. I find that in inversions there’s a tendency to hold your breath. If you find this too, then try to make yourself breathe. You may find that at first this action causes you to loose balance as your chest moves, but think about it, you’re never going to be able to hold a super long inversion if you’re having to hold your breath the whole time. With practice you’ll get used to making the small adjustments needed to keep balanced as you take a breath and then staying upside down becomes so much more comfortable .

A while back I was openly attacked on my personal FB for not being 100% vegetarian on the premise of "how can you be a yogi if you eat meat?" .

Here's the deal: I don't eat red meat and, in all honesty, I have never liked it, so there's not really any mystical reason behind my decision. However, I do eat the occasional chicken and fish. I try to stay aware and eat as little of these as I can, but I don't need to lie about my vegetarianism or non-vegetarianism. All in all, I think what's important is that we know why exactly yoga recommends to avoid the consumption of meat and keep it in mind every time we make a decision on what to eat, regardless of whether we are vegetarian or not.

So what I wanted to share today is some insight on why yoga traditionally recommends an ovo lacto vegetarian (or lacto vegetarian) diet as in "avoid the consumption of animal flesh". I often see people talking about the concept of ahimsa (non-violence) in this regard, but very few talk about the other reasons I will list below. Let me know in the comments if you knew about these and your thoughts!

🌿Meat is a source of second-hand energy. Energy comes from the sun and is processed by plants. Therefore, if we eat a plant-based diet, we're getting our energy directly from the source. However, when we eat a herbivore that had gotten their energy from plants, we're eating their second-hand used or leftover energy. If we were to eat a carnivore whose diet consists exclusively of herbivore animals, that'd be third-hand energy.

☘️Along the lines of energy, when we consume meat, we also consume the emotions and feelings of that animal. If the animal was scared, nervous, or angry at the time of slaughter, or if it lived a miserable life, those emotions are likely to be stored in their energy and pass into our body in one way or another.

🍀This is controversial and different people believe different things, but it's generally said (from the yogic point of view) that meat starts rotting in your stomach. In addition, it takes more effort for the digestive system to digest meat than veggies, leaving you feeling sluggish while all energy concentrates in this activity.
