The WTC Memorial plaza has 413 trees, all of which are still dormant, except for one: a 30-foot tall Callery Pear which has come to be known as the Survivor Tree.
When it was first discovered about a month after the 9/11 attacks, the tree was not much more than an 8-foot badly burned stump, but it was still alive. It was carefully removed from the rubble, replanted and nursed back to health by the NYC Parks Department at their Arthur Ross Nursery in the Bronx.
Ten years later, the tree returned home where it blooms every spring before any others on the plaza.
I’ve been living or working downtown since 2001 and I’d never noticed the tree until yesterday — it stopped me in my tracks. .
