Mammoths still exist in remote areas of northern Scandinavia. It is quite amazing really, aaand totally not true. This is a muskox, and while not being a mammoth, it is one of the worlds last existing prehistoric mammals. Today, their biggest wild populations live in national parks on Greenland. However, once upon a time these creatures made they way all over the northern hemisphere. They lived in all of nortern Eurasia, as well as on the North American continent. But as the story go with so many wild species, they were hunted into extinction by mankind. The muskox population survived only on Greenland.
But this picture is not taken on Greenland, nor is it taken in a zoo. It was taken on the Scandinavian peninsula. How can that be? Because in the 1930:s the Norwegian government recognised that the muskox was a part of the Scandinvian fauna and re-introduced them in Dovrefjell. That went "so-so". They did not survive, because they were all eaten by germans (and possibly some hungry Norwegians) during the german occupation of Norway in World War II. They were re-introduced again in the late 1940:s, and this time there were no hungry German soldiers around. Today, the muskox are alive and well in Dovrefjell, and in the 1970:s a family of muskox wandered into Sweden.
While few in numbers even today, the newly immigrated muskox survived in Sweden, and became once again a part of the Swedish fauna. Similiar re-wilding have been carried out in Russia as well as northern Canada with success. Proving two things. First, that the muskox, contrary to popular belief, died out because of of hunting, not climate change. And that wildlife can co-exist side by side with humanity if we only change our ways.
