"Even though life is getting objectively better by nearly every conceivable standard, more people feel hopeless, depressed, and alone." I listened to a really powerful TED talk a few weeks ago, and the message has been echoing around my head for a little while - so I thought I'd share 🍃
The speaker is @emilyesfahanismith, and she titles the talk "There's more to life than being happy." In her book and TED Talk, she argues that, as a society, we're chasing the wrong goal - that our culture is obsessed with the concept of happiness, while in fact a life of meaning should be our aim. She suggests that cultivating meaning comes down to four pillars, needed in equal measure to feel truly fulfilled.
1. Belonging: This is about being in relationships where you’re valued for who you are, and where you value others for who they are. It's about feeling a sense of belonging - in a family, community, school, or elsewhere - that in turn makes life more worth living.
2. Purpose: Finding one's calling can make life more fulfilling - but this is less about what we want, and more about what we give; it's about using our strengths to serve others, selflessly.
3. Transcendence: This means finding a mental state of complete focus and engagement - losing yourself and stepping beyond yourself, moments when you’re lifted above your life and connected to a higher reality. Maybe through art, faith, gardening, or writing for example - it's about losing sense of time and place.
4. Storytelling: This is the story we tell ourselves about ourselves. It's not a list of events, it's a narrative that changes and evolves around what has been lost and what has been gained. It's about creating, editing, and transforming the story of our lives - and then reflecting on how we came to be ourselves, and how our story may continue in the future.
Together, these form an arc of a story that is rich, rewarding, and fulfilling - not always happy or extraordinary - but lived with dignity and meaning 🌱
