Ethologists (scientists of animal behaviour) will tell you that play is an “expensive behaviour”. This means that it requires significant energy output without obvious benefits.
However, the adaptive significance of play hypothesis suggests that play is important because, in addition to being fun, it teaches young animals (in this case, puppies and dogs) important skills and rules for cooperation as adults.
