The mighty heart excites me everyday to get up and go to work. I am proud to be looking at the electric activity of the hearts of my patients everyday. It is amazing to me how the heart generates an electric impulse in order to create the mechanical pumping that makes the transfer of oxygenated blood to the tissues possible. Without the ability of the cardiac cells to generate this electric impulse, the mechanical/pumping response would not be possible. When this electric system goes bad the patient requires an external pacemaker device to pace the heart to sustain the pumping. How amazing are the cardiac cells? As amazing as they are, once damaged cardiac cells cannot regenerate. For example in the case of a myocardial infarction (heart attack) when the blood flow to the heart (because hey the heart needs oxygenated blood too in order to function) is blocked usually by some fatty deposit built up in coronary arteries that feed and sustain the heart, the blood flow to the heart is stopped, the heart tissue dies and it cannot regenerate. This brings up the importance of the right diet and exercise that keeps the fatty deposits in the arteries low and the flow of blood to the heart constant.
Please cherish your healthy heart today. Thank it for sustaining your life and do what you can to help your heart. Once the heart goes out, life cannot he sustained. Check up on your heart regularly. ❤
