I started my journey with Ashford in 2013. I had previously worked at Wal-Mart for 6years and quit because I was tired of working for not enough pay for a job that consumed all of my time not to mention was killing my body as well. Lifting heavy loads, standing on my feet for hours and hours, never being acknowledged for my hard work, unable to move up to a higher position I felt stuck in a dead end job. I had two children one being my daughter who is diagnosed with severe Autism. She is nonverbal and requires 24/7 supervision. My son was 6at the time and I began working in a group home for developmentally disabled individuals like my daughter. I worked there for about a year and could not handle the conditions of this position. I witnessed abuse, neglect, just horrible things and decided to make a change! I initially decided to enroll in my local community college but at the very last step the school stopped offering the program I was interested in due to not enough students being enrolled. That day I received a call from Ashford. I have no idea how they got my number but after talking with my admissions advisor for hours upon hours I was determined that the whole process was God's plan for me. I started in August,2013 unsure of my goal but determined to become an entrepreneur and become my own boss!! It wasn't until probably my third course that I realized that my business would be established to help developmentally disabled individuals. I looked back at the road I had been led down and knew it was all part of the plan. I started working as a direct service worker assisting disabled individuals in their own homes and have supported myself and my children for the past 4years doing so and in October at the age of 37, I will finally have my degree in entrepreneurship. My plans are to open a community center for developmentally disabled individuals to learn skills, have fun and most importantly become more independent as functioning members of society. It hasn't been easy as a single mother but I am determined to be the positive role model my children need and advocate for special needs individuals. #augrad2017 #Ashford #gosaints #MyAshfordU

My name is Liz, and I’m 32 years old. I live in Michigan and have three children, ages 8, 9, and 12. It wasn’t until my first child was born that I decided to go to school. I didn’t want her to think I was stupid or worthless, so I started my classes at Ashford. I worked my butt off, and I felt overwhelmed doing papers and discussions every week while often yelling at the computer. It took a lot longer than I thought it would, and I gave up. But then my children kept asking me when I was going to finish. So I got my courage up and started again. Not only did I receive my Bachelor’s degree in 2015, I have continued to this day: studying and working.
Don’t give up! I wanted to throw the towel in many times, but I always got through by keeping my end goal in mind. For all of you finding it harder and harder each week: your education will pay off. The work you are doing now is for your family and your future. YOU CAN do it!

“I thoroughly enjoyed @TEDx_official. It served to reinvigorate my motivation. With the theme of “Point of Departure,” the large underlying theme from the talks were kindness and movement. #Kindness meaning the small things really do matter. Just one act could largely affect someone’s life. #Movement as in moving forward; as in having groups of people taking the next steps to improve an issue to the benefit of the greater group. I was really challenged to question what matters to me and what I can do next. I have already purchased TEDx Mile High tickets for November.” – Tori Badgett, Ashford College Advisor #MyAshfordU #flashbackfriday
