I will now begin to talk about the spread of Islam into North Africa. This religion played a monumental role in the cultural, moral and economic development of not just North Africa but frankly almost half of the entire African continent. This religion would build tons of dynastys and famous Men and women alike who have been almost promoted to legendary status. This religion took the North African coast out of it's dark rut it had been in after the collapse of Rome and made it the center of the world for it's time. This religion took isolated tribes from Atlas mountains and Sahara desert and crafted them into empires. Indeed after its spread North Africa would never be the same again.

(2/2) As Umayyad leadership declined, dissenting forces began to stir throughout the Islamic world. Once again, relationship to the family of the prophet Muhammad was paramount, especially descent from his son-in-law ‘Ali and his daughter Fatima. However, those who supported ‘Ali had lost power after the first civil war and the rise of the Umayyads. Many of the ‘Alid supporters had subsequently fled to Khorasan, where they had intermarried with local populations. There a new message began to reach them: one of equality for all Muslims, not just Arabs, that would unite Shi’a and Sunni sects, and of leaders that would rule not just politically but spiritually as well. This propaganda was circulated by Abu Muslim (d.755), the leader of the rebellion and a future kingmaker. The grassroots rebellion against the Umayyads was designed to re-integrate the rulers and ruled, instead of isolating them as the Umayyads had done. However, though the rebel leaders recognized the importance of choosing someone from among the family of the prophet Muhammad to lead them, controversy remained over who that person would be. Eventually in 743, the Abbasid clan, which took its name from al-‘Abbas, the uncle of the prophet Muhammad, won out and gave its name to the growing revolution. Islamic tradition spoke of the end of the world being heralded “when the black flags appear...” and this certainly marked the end of the Umayyad world, when “we saw the lamps of truth extinguished.” As the sun set on the westward focused Umayyad empire, a new and greater dynasty was building in the East, one that would focus and build up the east (particularly Persia). In 750, the last Umayyad governor was defeated at the Battle of Zab. The Abbasid empire had begun and would last, in one form or another, until 1258, when it was invaded by the Mongols. •
