It was premiered at Cage’s 25 Years Retrospective Concert on May 15, 1958. The retrospective concert was organised and supported by Cage’s circle of artist friends including Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. .

Happy Birthday John Cage! His pioneering collaborative spirit had a lasting influence on musicians, artists and poets of his time and generations to come. Winter Music, 1957 (for 1 to 20 pianos) was dedicated to Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, who were his close collaborators, as was Merce Cunningham. @johncagetrust @rauschenbergfoundation #JohnCage #RobertRauschenberg #JasperJohns #MerceCunningham #pianist #composer #poet #artist #musician #collaboration #performance #staytuned #newwork #musicartlondon

Very pleased to see the wonderful book art installation by artist Pauline Rafal - originally created for MusicArt London - now exhibited at POSK gallery. The installation was inspired by the music and poetry of composer Robert Schumann (1810-1856) and letters with his fiancée and concert pianist Clara Wieck (later Clara Schumann). It was first presented at our Conceptual Concert by pianist Annie Yim in 2015. #bookartist #PaulineRafal #Schumann #Kinderszenen #piano #poetry #letters #composer #pianist #annieyim #bookart #installation #collaboration #music #gallery #musicartlondon

A phenomenal production of The Bassarids by Hans Werner Henze (1926-2012) premiered in 1966 at the Salzburg Festival. Henze said at the time, “I believe that the road from Wagner’s Tristan to Mahler and Schoenberg is far from finished, and with The Bassarids I have tried to go further along it. I am not prepared to relinquish what the centuries have passed on to us.” Libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallmamn after The Bacchae (406 BC) by Euripides. Conducted by #KentNagano with the Wiener Philharmoniker. Directed by

John Cage’s Lecture On Nothing included in his book Silence (1961). The Lecture was first given in 1949 at the Artists’ Club in NYC (started by Robert Motherwell):

.
“Half intellectually
and half sentimentally ,
when the war came along,
I decided to use
only
quiet sounds.
There seemed to me
to be no truth,
no good,
in anything big in society.”

Reflecting on our Concert & Conversation in Berlin 2017 within the exhibition of artist @_christopherlebrun, captured here Christopher Le Brun’s insights and live performance by Annie Yim of Schoenberg’s Six Little Piano Pieces, Op. 19 No.1 (1913) at Arndt Art Agency. See his new paintings now @lisson_gallery #throwbackthursday #tbt
.
The music programme and conversation reflects on the analogies between music and painting. Musical development during the early 20th century was in a state of flux. The programme drawn from around this period has been selected jointly by Christopher Le Brun and Annie Yim to elucidate shared aesthetic elements between the two art forms: the chromatic and ecstatic qualities in Scriabin and Rachmaninov; the crossroads between tonality and atonality in Schoenberg; the evocative colours and images of Debussy.

Great memories from our first Conceptual Concert with artist Christopher Le Brun at Katrin Bellinger’s Colnaghi Gallery (old location) in 2015, juxtaposed with live piano performance of works from late romantic to a new contemporary piece, including this Scriabin’s Poeme Op.32 No.1 (1903) recorded live from our 2017 concert collaboration in Berlin #throwbackthursday #tbt #musicartlondon #christopherlebrun #Scriabin #colour #chromaticism #live #performance #recording #annieyim #London #Berlin #art #gallery #piano #musicalinfluence

"In music, as in painting and even in the written word...there is always a gap which is completed by the imagination of the author” - Charles Baudelaire. Watch our weekly live video, this week featuring the pairing of composer #Debussy and poet #Baudelaire, where the piano piece “Sounds and perfume turn in the evening air” (1910) was inspired by Baudelaire’s poem Harmonie du Soir.
.
Excerpt from Baudelaire’s poem:
.
The season is at hand when swaying on its stem
.
Every flower exhales perfume like a censer
.
Sounds and perfume turn in the evening air
.
Melancholy waltz and languid vertigo!

Loving #JohnCage this week. His beautiful love poem (1943) to his longtime partner and collaborator #MerceCunningham was juxtaposed with Cage’s piano piece Dream (1948) in our performance. The piano piece was premiered with choreography by Cunningham. #live #performance #ThePoetSpeaks #piano #poetry #AnnieYim #musicartlondon #Conceptual #Concert @cityuniversitylondon

Live video of performance from our recent project: a poetic transition from the conceptual silence of John Cage’s 4’33” (1952) to Arvo Pärt’s new aesthetic “Tintinabulli” (little bells) born in his Für Alina (1976). Here performed by Annie Yim, accompanied by the recorded voice of poet Zaffar Kunial’s new work in response - “Sunlight’”. #darknesstolight

The concept of MusicArt London | Conceptual Concerts was born after this inspiring collaboration with the brilliant @erdemlondon @erdem for his 2014 London Fashion Week show. The music chosen for this occasion was Fratres (1977) by #ArvoPart, performed by pianist #AnnieYim and cellist #RichardBirchall. Erdem’s monochrome collection incorporated poetry by #waltwhitman and #emilydickinson sewn into the garments.

Thrilled to receive a great review of our recent multimedia Conceptual Concert for music/poetry/art, The Poet Speaks: From Debussy to Pärt, for live piano + recorded voices. ‘An intriguing and highly original concert by pianist Annie Yim’.
Stay tuned for our live video! Our gratitude to Arvo & Nora Pärt, and the Arvo Pärt Centre for their help in our research for this project.
.
One of the pieces was Arvo Pärt’s Für Alina, an iconic piano piece written in 1976. ‘Poet Zaffar Kunial wrote “Sunlight” in response to the music, a short yet meaningful poem which perfectly complemented the simplicity and profundity of Pärt’s writing’. Full review on @musicartlondon across social media.
