A little dive into our collection today! Did you know that in addition to his love of music, Louis Armstrong was an avid eater of Chinese food? So much so that he wrote ‘Cornet Chop Suey’ in 1926.
The neighborhood he grew up in abutted New Orleans’ Chinatown, and many of his personal writings describe his love for the food from that part of town. 🍜
We acquired this record at the beginning of our current exhibition, Chow: Making the Chinese American Restaurant, because it is a testament to how popular Chinese food was in this country, and how it seeped its way into all aspects of American culture! 📀
