Progress report from @fitandbendy #contortandconsort yesterday... I always tell my students that not all your stretching days can be good days... but it's so hard to remember that myself! My back just wasn't having it yesterday and my shoulder was acting up again so I couldn't do much backbending. I know I need to be patient but wowsers do I miss that bend. I'm going to do some more #muscleactivationtechniques on my shoulder this month with my instructor at @venturatrainingandathletics since that is what has made the biggest difference so far.
In the meantime, I ❤️ my #middlesplits they are my happy place!

For the purposes of understanding this process, think of the cerebellum as the central switchboard controlling every muscle in your body. It is connected to each of your muscles via the somatic nervous system – sort of like control wires.

Your cerebellum is where your body stores the information necessary to perform complex actions easily and naturally.
For example, when you pick up a glass of water and take a sip, you don’t have to consciously control the individual muscles that lift your arm up, extend it to the glass, grasp the glass without breaking or dropping it, lift the glass directly to your lips and tip it to the precise level where the water reaches the top of the glass. You just do it.

Your cerebellum takes care of a variety of complex tasks automatically on your behalf – walking, balancing, standing up straight, hitting a baseball, holding a child, etc. These are all learned behaviors – things that you practiced and learned over time. These behaviors are sort of like a computer program that your body automatically executes.

Sometimes things happen to you that cause your body to protect itself--accidents, pain, and overwork are good examples. In response to these stimuli, your body creates a new program, or a compensation pattern. These patterns are exactly what your body needs to create in order to protect itself from that trauma. The problem is that your body has no mechanism to let go of the compensation pattern when it is no longer needed.

Performing some reinforcement isometrics on the Isophit after my MATRx session at @MuscleActivationSchaumburg
We worked on my abs and obliques to tune up my trunk flexion and trunk rotation.
I walked in feeling tight on the left side of my body, especially my hip and IT band. After my session with Charlie I walked out feeling much more limber on my left side.
What did we do? It’s more like what did he do! I was on a table for the entire session while he performed muscle activation techniques on me. Each muscle is tested in different directions and positions, then if it is inhibited we do some isometric contractions. M.A.T. gets muscles to tighten and contract properly, providing more stability. It’s interesting to see how muscles that were weak can become stronger after just a few minutes. He retests each muscle and if it doesn’t hold he will perform the techniques again.
Even Peyton Manning swears by M.A.T. I’m looking forward to feeling the results and seeing how the next few sessions reboot my body.

The principles of Muscle Activation Techniques® say that muscle tightness is secondary to muscle weakness. When we walk on ice, we relate instability with an external surface, the body knows that as we are walking on ice that it needs to tighten up to protect itself. As we age and as our muscular system becomes more and more dysfunctional the instability becomes an intrinsic issue as opposed to an external issue. So the instability may be part of the muscular system itself and the same neurological response that occurs when we walk-on ice occurs as we age or as the muscle system gets more and more dysfunctional(stride length shortens, they become more protected, they limit their range of motion).
