I had traveled half way around the world specifically to go to the famous Juice Centre of Muscat. Of course, when I arrived, it was closed. There was some month long holiday or something, where people can't eat or drink out of devotion to God. I'm not sure what it's called, and honestly all I cared about was getting a cup of their divine Karkade juice.
It was like a ghost town and the only thing open nearby was the Muttrah Souk. I marched inside and started to ask every merchant, "who is in charge of the Juice Centre!??" None of them seem to know who or English. I'm getting angrier and thirstier by the minute. I see a passing officer and very tersely state "look, I'm American, I'm thirsty, and I want juice. Why should I suffer for your holy days?" The cop then looked at me like I was mad and told me in perfect English to calm down. That he'd go get the shop manager and tell him to open. I thank him and stand in the middle of the souk waiting.
30 minutes pass and no cop and no juice guy. I am more thirsty than I have ever been in my entire life. I'm on the verge of tears. No longer able to wait, I walk out of the souk into the blazing heat and tell my driver to take me back to my hotel, feeling entirely defeated.
Hotels have special licenses to serve food during this time, so when I arrive I order juice from room service and drink it alone in my room.
