For the past week, my baby was admitted to hospital twice for being febrile (up to 38.7 C). Now that he’s better (thanks GOD πŸ™πŸ») I feel at ease to talk about it so that other mommies would know what to expect. Mommies know the following please:
1. Temp of 38.3 Celsius and above is considered high in infants below 3 months and thus they require full sepsis workup
2. Full sepsis workup includes CBC, blood culture,Lumbar Puncture (taking fluid from spine to exclude or diagnose serious bacterial infections), urine Analysis (they take urine through catheterization (Ω…ΩŠΩ„) )and urine culture.
3. Antibiotics are given anyway pending the results. (In Nadi’s case amoxicillin and cefotaxime).
4. CSF (fluid in spine) shouldn’t have any WBCs or RBCs
5. In case of persistent fever (as in our case) further workup was considered (liver enzymes, abdominal ultrasound and nasal swab)
6. Liver enzymes (SGOT & SGPT were elevated somehow, around 100) (usually they are not worrisome except if they exceed 300-400 in
Infants)
7. Nasal swab shows if there’s a virus mainly (Rhino virus) that is common in infants which appeared to be positive in Nadi’s case.
Now he’s under observation for fever.
P.S: Only check the fever of your baby rectally!

General Tips related to your baby’s nutrition and introduction of solid food:
1. Solid food shouldn’t be introduced to babies less than 6 months (Recommendations of AAP, WHO, UNICEF, ...)
2. Merge between Baby Led Weaning (self-feeding) and Spoon-feeding
3. Follow the 3 day wait rule (it means you should wait for 3 days whenever you start giving a new food item to your baby, before introducing another new item)
4. Start with vegetables not fruits (e.g: zucchini, broccoli, sweet potato, carrot,...)
5. AVOID salt and sugar
6. Turmeric, cinnamon and cumin can be introduced as early as 6 months
7. Avoid giving water to babies less than 6 months (may cause electrolyte imbalance and affect kidneys)
8. Starting of 8 months you can introduce stews

What is the truth about your body during and after pregnancy?
Normally a woman gains 11.5 kg-16 kg during pregnancy if she has average weight. If she’s underweight, she can gain up to 18 kg and 7 kg-10 kg in case she’s overweight. (In my case I gained 20 kg and I was underweight). As for weight loss, it took nine months for you to put the weight on, so you should give yourself at least that to take it off! But the good news is that you’ll lose up to 5 kgs before even leaving the hospital (baby weight and amniotic fluid) , then you will lose about 2 kgs water in the first week.
