The same hikes that are safe and friendly in the summer are a totally different animal in the snow.
I encourage you, if you're out there and you see someone without the proper gear or looking lost, please speak up. Or if someone wants to hike with you and they either don't have the right gear or skills-just say no. You might anger someone or offend someone, but you might also save a life.
I know I am guilty of passing people on the mountain who clearly have no business being there, and I have said nothing. Maybe we can take a moment to stop and kindly let people know what the are getting into. I don't know what the answer is to stop all these deaths and injuries on the mountain, but it's a start.
Rebel and I waiting for Lorena & Rob to cross a section on the Devil's Backbone after we climbed the Baldy Bowl last winter. We were the fortunate (and prepared) ones. After this hike many deaths and injuries occurred.
