September 3, 2017 - Josh Adams from Harbor Church in Cape Cod, MA spoke about Elijah's journey from a brook in Jordan to Zerephath in Sidon. Zerephath means "place of refinement". I was inspired by his message to pray that God would refine me, having no idea what I was in for.
Less than 24 hours later, I was completely stunned to find out we were expecting a baby. I thought that God must be answering my prayer of refinement through the process of having a baby. My pregnancy, labor, and delivery were rather uneventful. I had a few little bumps in the road and a long labor, but overall everything went smoothly and we had a perfect baby boy.
June 17, 2018 - I developed a fever, flu-like symptoms, and felt a strange knot. I saw several doctors, all of whom insisted that I just needed a few days of antibiotics. After 3 rounds of Rocephin and a week of oral antibiotics, I was much worse.
June 25, 2018 - My first appointment with a surgeon. This was supposed to be a consult only, but he deemed a drainage procedure necessary that day. Pathology ruled it was MRSA.
Since then, I have had the same drainage procedure done 10 times (tied for the highest number this department at St. Vincents has performed on a person). Tanner and I started praying together every night specifically for my healing. God kept leading me to the book of Joshua. I realized this was my time of refinement.
A few weeks ago, the infection had gotten significantly worse. My surgeon called me after hours to schedule an invasive surgery that would put me out of commission for 6-8 weeks and would end my ability to breastfeed. MRSA can be very dangerous once it enters the bloodstream. I asked for a little more time. He gave me a week.
I had to be very intentional with my thoughts. After all, this was supposed to be one of the best times of my life. It felt unfair that I was in such a dark place.
Today - I went to St. Vincents for my usual weekly appointment. I saw the surgeon who sent me for yet another drainage procedure...
