Beautiful day in Rockland working on the @vincentmillay House and Poetry Center. She was born on the left side of this perfectly symmetrical duplex. Also in town meeting on the McDougal School Park - which is being planted with edible trees and shrubs for urban foraging.

Happy Monday! Arts Complex Beggars Wharf Project One, Rockland Maine This speculative museum will act as a beacon at the gateway corner to the new Beggars Wharf waterfront redevelopment district in Rockland Maine. It will also work as the figurehead for a greater museum complex, to include a block of remodeled historic warehouses including the Bicknell Factory Building, an original Beggar's Wharf hub. Altogether the complex will work as a fluid series of museum, studio, event and educational spaces as well as, along with other commercial and residential mixed use block development, steward for the public park spaces in, around, and on the complex.
The museum / event space begins with a ground floor connected with the streetscape outside, which then unfurls upwards through intertwining processions of indoor and outdoor spaces. Along the way are interior and exterior galleries, theater and lecture spaces, cafes, terraces and parks. The interior spaces are flexible such that events can inhabit each or a series of spaces. The exterior spaces on and around the museum include a variety of public and semi-public park spaces and a center-block sculpture garden. A mushroom-like skin of cedar wood fins veil the core and upper museum facade. The cedar fins appear continuous from interior to exterior, acting as doorway, railing, light and air diffuser, sun and rain screen, with patterning which morphs from every vantage point. The cedar fins are manufactured by techniques both new and old, digital and analog. Inside the cedar fins are CNC milled and maintain their warm natural color. Outside the cedar fins twist via steam bending and grey with the elements. #workinprogress #park #waterfront #hotel #museum #mixeduse #townhouse #architecture #landscape #landscapeurbanism #brownfield #urbanrevitalization #workingwaterfront #marina #mrldllc

The final tiered tray of parking for a great project we have been working on for years. Feels like I was just doing the grading plan for this yesterday. Our initial design in the late 90’s called for an open constructed wetland system to handle stormwater. After much negotiation with MaineDEP they allowed us to proceed. Today rain gardens and green infrastructure are bmp’s.

Framing other sides of the Beggars Wharf museum block are townhouses and apartments above a primarily retail ground floor between the street and sculpture garden at the block’s center. The townhouses are split-level from front to back, allowing a range of connections between kitchen and living room, living and study, master and children or guest bedrooms, bedrooms and terraces. Each room is framed on four sides by a c-shaped concrete shell and steel core box, with the ends open, glazed, or with retractable walls. The townhouses are a series of trays with views on the inside, and a series of shifting boxes from the outside. beggars wharf waterfront redevelopment rockland, maine In collaboration with Rockland Maine City Planning and Yarmouth Maine based MRLD Landscape Architecture + Urbanism, with whom we previously designed the Maine State Pier, we are currently developing a design vision for the Beggars Wharf brownfield waterfront district of Rockland, where we are proposing a mixed use of museums, studio spaces, hotel, public spaces, commercial and marine uses, as well as an array of townhouse / flex apartments. #townhouse #architecture #rocklandmaine #maine #waterfront #industrialredevelopment #brownfieldredevelopment #urbandesign #rezonng #landscapeurbanism #corten #littleboxes #lobstertraps #mrldllc
