A caterer murders young women as part of a ritual to bring the spirit of an Egyptian goddess to life. Plan 9 From Outer Space really gets a bad rep. Ed Wood’s passion project is widely regarded as one of the worst films of all time. Watching it, it’s pretty obvious that it is pretty bad, but it has a certain charm to it. It is so jaw-droppingly bonkers that it is difficult not to enjoy it. Blood Feast is kind of in that same vein, but somehow, it skates by due to its inclusion of over the top gore. For its time, the blood is absolutely shocking. We watch the killer slice and dice his victims, whipping them or removing their body parts, leaving behind pools of blood. It is amazing to go from other movies of that era to this and see how much Herschell Gordon Lewis upped the bloodshed ante. Put all that bloodshed aside, though, and Blood Feast is pretty bad. It is amateurish on a technical level with shots not matching up, bad editing, and terrible sound mixing, while also featuring a poorly written script and even worse acting. It really is a disaster. It feels like it would be a fixture as a midnight movie or something worth a late night out at the drive in. There is a scene at a swimming pool that features a long, lingering shot of a buxom blonde in a bikini. Blood Feast is definitely an exploitation flick. It is kind of a mess. But much like Plan 9 From Outer Space, it is one that people will certainly find great entertainment in watching with groups of people multiple times, laughing at the unintentionally funny moments, while also jumping or cringing at the shocking violence. Blood Feast is a bad movie, but it is definitely a good time.
