Rocco and His Brothers (1960), directed by Luchino Visconti.
Rocco and His Brothers (Italian: Rocco e i suoi fratelli) is inspired by an episode from the novel Il ponte della Ghisolfa by Giovanni Testori. The film stars Alain Delon, Renato Salvatori, Annie Girardot, and Claudia Cardinale, in one of her early roles before she became internationally known. Set in Milan, it tells the story of Rocco (Delon) and his four brothers who each look for a new way in life when a prostitute (Girardot) comes between Rocco and his brother Simone (Salvatori). When it was first released in the US in 1961, about half an hour of footage was cut out as it was deemed to be too violent for American audiences. The 13 onscreen stabbings in the European cut of the film were whittled down to just 3 for the American version. This movie found it's place on Martin Scorsese's list named "39 movies you must see before you die". Francis Ford Coppola was such a big fan of this film that he hired its composer, Nino Rota, to score his 1972 masterwork, The Godfather (1972).
