The Tubes Video (1981)
Directed by Russell Mulcahy
Definitely part of the fun of going through a bulk collection of laserdiscs is looking at ones I don’t know about. So here we are with the band, The Tubes, performing from their album The Completion Backward Principle. The video director, Russell Mulcahy, was one of the first music video directors, directing Buggles-Video Killed the Radio Star; Vienna for Ultravox (which incidentally was the first album I ever bought); Duran Duran’s Rio and many others. The first movie I saw of his was Razorback and his music video background certainly influenced that, as it did his follow up, the very successful Highlander......The most bizarre video in this set is for the song Mondo Bondage in which the lead singer has hot coffee poured down his leather jock strap, eggs cracked and smeared on his buttocks and then a hot iron pressed onto one bum cheek to leave a red mark.
