Personal post from our Clinical Nutritionist & Functional Medicine Practitioner, Filipa Bellette. How she is beating Adrenal Fatigue after having kids, and feeling better than ever!
"Since having kids, I've really struggled to 'push myself' at the gym. Any time I had a burst of 'feel-good' energy, and I pushed myself harder than usual, I would be left feeling so achey and weak and tired for the next few days (worse than your regular DOMS), and often went down with a cold or flu. I remember a year or two ago a young whipper-snapper said I needed to harden up - if I trained every day, I'd just push through the pain and get stronger, and I wouldn't 'hurt' so much anymore. First piece of wisdom from myself:
THAT IS A LOAD OF CRAP! If your coach tells you that you need to train everyday to get over 'DOMS' or whatever, GET A NEW COACH. Your body is precious. It is hurting for a reason. Very often there is something out of balance that needs to be fixed - 'pushing through' will only make it worse.
When I started specialising in Functional Medicine, under the mentorship of world expert in Functional Medicine & Adrenal Fatigue, Dr Daniel Kalish, the first thing I did was test my own adrenals. My saliva sample revealed I was in Stage 2 Adrenal Fatigue, and now I suddenly understood why my body broke down if I 'pushed too hard' at the gym. 💪
I've been healing my adrenals with nutritional supplements and naturally derived hormones, as well as going to bed earlier, being 100% perfect with my nutrition, exercising wisely, and managing stress. One big change I have noticed is how quickly I recover from training sessions. I rarely even get DOMS now, even after pushing myself harder than usual, and certainly don't feel chronically achey and tired anymore. I'm slowly feeling stronger within myself (still very average compared to others, but that's ok!), and I think I've only caught one little cold, which is pretty awesome as this was an ongoing thing. Happy days!"
