🔥Mid-Low Trap Strengthening Anywhere🔥

⚡️ The more convenient it is to perform an exercise, the more likely you will do it! The middle and lower trapezius muscles not only help with posture but also help with proper shoulder mechanics, keeping your shoulder joint and rotator cuff healthy for the long term. Without going into too much detail, these muscles help move and stabilize your scapula (shoulder blade) in a way that keeps your shoulder joint socket in the correct positioning so that your small rotator cuff muscles can work more efficiently and avoid any unwanted movement or pinching of the shoulder joint structures.

This progression starts with a short lever arm and then progresses to a longer lever arm based on your strength. If you can't hold more than a few seconds, that's okay, but I try to eventually have people hold these up to 30 seconds to improve muscle activation and the mind-muscle connection.
.
💥Level 1
1️⃣ Rest forehead on opposite forearm and place other arm down with elbow bent to 90 degrees and your hand just above your head
2️⃣ Tilt your shoulder blade backwards and across towards your opposite back pocket and hold
3️⃣ Maintain this position while lifting only your hand from the desk/table, thumb up
4️⃣ Hold each rep for 5-30 seconds or until you can't maintain your shoulder blade position
5️⃣ 10-15 Reps, 2-3 sets

💥Level 2
1️⃣ Repeat as in Step 1 but lift your elbow off the surface
2️⃣ Keep your hand higher than your elbow
3️⃣ Hold for 5-30 seconds
4️⃣ 10-15 Reps, 2-3 sets

💥Level 3
1️⃣ Repeat as in Step 2 but keep your elbow straight
2️⃣ Hold for 5-30 seconds
3️⃣ 10-15 Reps, 2-3 sets

💥Level 4, 4+
1️⃣ Add slow and controlled movement in the shoulder from the bottom position with elbow bent to full elevation with elbow straight
2️⃣ Attempt 10-20 quality reps, 2-3 sets

1️⃣ Add circles in either direction at the top range to challenge stability/endurance of the shoulder blade (trapezius) and joint muscles (rotator cuff)
2️⃣ Shoot for 10-20 circles in each direction, 2-3 sets

💣😇 (Kettlebell Halos: Add DEPTH to your SHOULDERS) .

Working through swings, throws, or explosive upper body movement? Throw this into the mix to better prep your shoulders and upper back.
.
Start light, reach not only in front but also behind your head. Keep the elbows tall and proud. As we progress from quarters, to semis, then full circles, the movement will demand more coordination, control and tissue extensibility.
.
Go at a slow, steady pace (we ain’t racing fam!) Keep the cues in mind: Inflate, ribs down, chin tucked, butt tight. The key here is CONTROL. Control your back from arching too much when your arms raise above your head, trying to point your elbows to the sky. Keeping the butt tight promotes better support for the weight.
.
This is a good regression from using a mace/hammer or a shoulderok, which is more difficult due to it’s leverages. And more importantly, have fun with it 🌊🙌. .

Looking back on this year and feeling so grateful for our family online & in the studio at The Movement Factory 💚

Having fun in the snow yesterday and getting in lots of NEAT movement
NEAT means Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. It is an umbrella term for all the movement that we do…or should be doing…….during the day, that is not formal exercise e.g. walking around the house, doing the washing, gardening, sweeping, hoovering, bending down, picking up, reaching up to the top shelf, going up and down the stairs, lifting the baby, carrying the shopping, and many more. But with the convenience of machinery to do lots of things for us, right down to the TV remote, we now need to factor in this movement formally into our lives……….how crazy is that??!!! NEAT movement contributes to regular movement throughout the day, thus helping to reduce the negative impact of a sedentary lifestyle and job. Benefits may also include more energy, improved sense of wellbeing, and empowerment to activate change. Research is indicating that a person who employs NEAT movement throughout the day may contribute to sustained, and maintained weight loss more successfully than someone who has a sedentary day with one vigorous exercise session.
So throughout your day, activate as much NEAT movement as you can. Challenge yourself………list all the NEAT movement you do each day. Look at the variety of movements you can incorporate. Here's a great exercise for those desk jockeys! Here's the deal..find the true limitation. Not all stiffness is created equal! Limited range of motion isn't always a "mobility" problem. Sometimes there's a missing link between the brain and the muscles that control a certain movement. This is referred to as "stability and/or motor control". _________________________________

In this case, we are working on controlling thoracic rotation utilizing the range of motion this patient has! Using this banded assisted thread the needle technique, the band gives a feedback mechanism to the brain to recruit muscles needed to accomplish the movement.

Feeling stiff in the mid back from sitting all day long? Go ahead, and give this exercise a try! Set up on all fours with a band attached with some good resistance. Control the movement while the band pulls you through to your end range of motion then rotate while pulling the band towards you and squeeze at the top. Vitamin D - If you are going to take one supplement, this is the one. Vitamin D is made naturally in the body when your skin is exposed to mid-day sunlight. The darker your skin the longer that exposure needs to be for adequate production. Vitamin D has anti-viral properties and actually works in the body as a hormone that allows for the genetic expression necessary to combat nearly every disease known to man. Probably because I braced better 🙃. Most likely deload the Squat anyway because of my failures on my 5s and 3s weeks.

Noticeably better log press too as assistant exercise.
Really squeezing my glutes, as if I am holding a pen between my cheeks (or preventing an ass raping), made the lift better!
