Having fun in the snow yesterday and getting in lots of NEAT movement
NEAT means Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. It is an umbrella term for all the movement that we do…or should be doing…….during the day, that is not formal exercise e.g. walking around the house, doing the washing, gardening, sweeping, hoovering, bending down, picking up, reaching up to the top shelf, going up and down the stairs, lifting the baby, carrying the shopping, and many more. But with the convenience of machinery to do lots of things for us, right down to the TV remote, we now need to factor in this movement formally into our lives……….how crazy is that??!!! NEAT movement contributes to regular movement throughout the day, thus helping to reduce the negative impact of a sedentary lifestyle and job. Benefits may also include more energy, improved sense of wellbeing, and empowerment to activate change. Research is indicating that a person who employs NEAT movement throughout the day may contribute to sustained, and maintained weight loss more successfully than someone who has a sedentary day with one vigorous exercise session.
So throughout your day, activate as much NEAT movement as you can. Challenge yourself………list all the NEAT movement you do each day. Look at the variety of movements you can incorporate.
