@Regranned from @philippine.war.chronicles - MORO WARRIORS. JOLO, PHILIPPINES. 1901.
Muslim Moro warriors armed with shields and wooden Barong swords showcase their fighting art and skills in front of visiting American soldiers in Jolo.
After the outbreak of the "Philippine Insurrection", US military officials paid a visit to the Sultan of Sulu and other prominent Datus(Moro chiefs) in Southern Philippines. To ensure the Moros would stay out of the so-called Tagalog war, the Moros would sign the Bates Treaty with the US forces, which declared friendship and guaranteed the Sultans authority and independent rule over his territory. The image taken in 1901 would be during this time of peace between the Moros and the US military. However, once the 'Tagalog War/Philippine Insurrection' had been declared over in July 1902, the US forces began a Pacification Campaign of the southern regions of the Philippines. They would alter the Bates Treaty and later declare it null and void; the treaty later believed to be just a stalling instrument on the Moros so they would not ally with Aguinaldos forces and force the Americans in a war on two fronts. The Sultan of Sulu would soon be regarded as a mere figurehead, and all Moro regions were dubbed Moroland. The US colonial government would abolish slavery throughout Mindanao and the Moro disarmament era would begin. For centuries human trafficking, slave raiding, and owning slaves were a cultural right and a daily necessity to a Moro. Conflicts with the Moros would last up until 1913. The period of resistance and rebellion against American rule would later be known as the The Moro Rebellion (1902-1913). -

The Moros are an ethnic group known for their fearless warriors. During the Spanish period the southern region of the Philippines had remained uncontrolled. The Moros were regarded as unconquered and never subjugated.

Diki Diki stood at 33" tall and was a Panglima of the Tausug Moros in the district of Pangutarang Islands. He was a beloved leader, and during festivals would always display his skill as a warrior.
