FIRST POST UTA RUN

Got out for my first run post UTA on Thursday. Iโ€™ve been stretching and rolling during my recovery from the weekends UTA50. The legs felt really good. A little tiny bit tired, but not sore at all. They felt present fresh. This week though I am very tired so have been trying to get more sleep where I can. Iโ€™ve also been eating everything in sight. Need to change this and get back to program next week. Target goals is to put some focus back to my weight loss journey, concentrate on balance and build glute strength after my back problems in March.

When I first got news that my study abroad in UK was confirmed, I told myself that I came to Europe with the goal of travelling, spending time and racing in the great mountains out there. The goal has been achieved but my time here is shortly coming to an end. Deepest gratitude to those who made this dream come true. POST ULTRA CONFESSIONS: THINGS Iโ€™VE EATEN THIS WEEK

This week my diet has been pretty bad. Itโ€™s been a recovery week so my focus is off. Twice this week for dinner I have cut a baguette in half, filled each half with apricot and fig jam then slotted slabs of Camembert Cheese into it. Iโ€™m pretty sure there is not much nutritional value here, but it has been great for a blow out!

Had a really nice experience doing the Pace22 at the Ultra Trail Australia, wasnโ€™t expected to do a sub 3H, but happy of the result. A really big thanks to my training partner @cher_adore_courir_ , Kenneth Kwok and Kok Yong Low.

The full week end was a really nice experience, cheering the teammates of @morphperformance for the 50Km, then doing the support Crew for the 100Km runners. I learned a lot about what is a real team supporting each other.
Canโ€™t wait to come back here next year with the target of 100Km with my lovely partner.

I didnโ€™t pass out from massive cramps in the first aid station after finishing. Yay!

I didnโ€™t have massive cramps stop my forward momentum on course. I did have some small cramps and twinges to my inner thighs (adductor/ VMO) and some small cramps to my calves at various point around the course. Most notably after stairs and steep hills/ terrain. I was able to manage them by knowing my salt loss and trying to minimise loss through electrolyte intake and when needed supplement that with some salt tablets to shock the nervous system.

I finished in 8.09 this year compared to 8.51 last year. Although a different course, I would have said this one was much harder. There was lots of stairs up and down and steep inclines and declines. This all taxed the quads. Poles really helped to keep upright posture up the hills. Stairs I managed by swapping my approach foot. I have been practising not using my right foot every time and fatiguing my right leg faster than my left. Tried to keep it a bit balanced but takes concentration and practice.

Stick to the plan. Last year I changed my nutrition plan on race day and it went awry. This year I stuck to it and it also paid off to have some back up and to know my carb requirements. During the first 5kms a flask containing two hours of Hammer Perpetuem blew its silicon cap spraying the contents all over me. I got it back on to save about half and then it did it again. I lost most of my planned nutrition. My liquid nutrition was split into thirds and the plan was to use that predominately for the first 2/3 of the race relying more on gels, Bloks and Bars for the remainder. I diverted some of my second half nutrition to use in the first half, topped up my second liquid nutrition flask at Fairmont and then grabbed some replacement gels, some banana pieces at QVH and again at the Helicopter pad. I had planned for 8 hours and also took some spares.

Day 3. Routine has set in and we knew what to do in the morning. Tearing down the tent was bittersweet but we only knew we were nearing the finish. After applying some sunscreen, we set off on a good 700m climb which involved plenty of technical scrambling. Something certainly new to me. Then we fucked up. Saw a bunch of rock formations and could not orient ourselves among that and some marshland. Misrecognized the small lake features. When we got in the right path and the checkpoint, we second-guessed ourselves about the need for a steep descent before climb when it's reported altitude was supposed to be the approximately the same as the peaks we have scrambled. Took a leap of faith and we somehow got it right.
I struggled again on a steep technical descent along a mountaineous stream. That ended rather quickly as we approached a groomed and flat 4wd track that was meant to serve as a long distance cross country road. Keeping in mind that my partner was injured, it was a good practice and discipline to slow down and hike it instesd of trying to run it.
The final kilometers were actually tough involving plenty of blistering hot tarmac that went on for almost forever. I got comfortable in the heat and trudged on without slowing down much, but felt like I could have been slightly dehydrated after not drinking enough for the morning.

I saw many competitors suffer in that stretch but it was not in fact, as tough as it was supposed to be. These are the externalities that creep in unexpectedly during longer events - they do not defeat or crush the hardened but certainly force all through a difficult patch.
Crossing the finish line, we got a beer in hand and a bean casserole in the other. Felt satisfied but also filthy and tired. (For the record, I tested my @waaultra carrier shirt to the extremes, using it daily through the coldest winter, for all my racing, and wore that 3 days straight in a row in the hot long weekend. The scenery in the lakes with such sunshine is breathtaking. Everyone I met en route has reminded me how fortunate I was to see the lakes in full glory. The C course takes us through some of the best climbs in the western lakes that earned us some incredible sights.
Descending has my shitty spot and I told myself I need to make a conscious effort to improve. My @inov8 #roclite305 has continued to serve me well after TransGranCanaria and MIUT in the lakes.ย  After 7-8 hours on trail, we make it back to finish line and enjoyed some great chow cooked up by the farmers wife. Alan brought an amazing TNF tent that became our little home for the long weekend. We cooked up some ramen for the carbs during dinner and joined the rest for a debrief and the legendary SILVA raffle (a GL3D tradition) before turning in for the night.
Before the sun sets at 9pm, I took a quick look at the map and planned the path and directions we had to take for day two. Thought much about how smooth things have gone with our meticulous attention to detail. Also thought about how I could have fucked it up and potentially got ourselves lost in the mountains for the night without my bivouac kit.
