Our neighbor @cityofsantamonica voted unanimously to ban single-use plastic and “bio plastic” food service ware- including utensils, straws, styrofoam containers, etc. We are very excited for them to set an example for other cities across the world!! #plasticfree #moreoceanlessplastic #allaboutwaste #zerowaste

Last night, an incredible group of individuals gathered at City Hall and explained the negative impact plastic has on our marine environment and community. They were heard - City Council voted unanimously to exercise a ban on plastic/bioplastic (including lids!!) in the surrounding Santa Monica community. This will be one of the first bans to identify bioplastic as an equally wasteful product and we are so thankful for our forward-thinking, mindful City Council and all their hard work on this ordinance. Details of implementation will follow, but in short, this is a HUGE WIN and we are so, so thankful for everyone who spoke, signed the petition, watched live or just sent good vibes!!! #oceanfriendlyrestaurants #surfriderla

Photo by @PaulNicklen // A giant wave crashes above @CristinaMittermeier while she free dives in the warm waters of Oahu’s west coast. The view from land is white sands, rugged shorelines, and a seemingly endless expanse of blue ocean. To a casual observer, it likely appears that all is well; that life underwater is flourishing. However, beneath the waves, is a growing storm of concern as we increasingly see the health of our oceans and its inhabitants deteriorating. Diving allows us to learn, explore, and expose our ocean’s most desperate issues and gives insight to solutions which can help to save some of our most essential ecosystems.

WOW! What an amazing effort by @zerowastejourneycapetown! Next time you’re at the beach, give it a try! You’ll be surprised to find out how many straws you will see in just a couple minutes!

In an attempt to use less plastic I am experimenting with new products like this shampoo bar from Maui.

We believe there’s a better way - where we get what we want without all the waste. Where people take pride in the steps they and their community have taken to reduce throw-away packaging. Where businesses partner with community leaders to provide healthy, nutritious food served in reusable cups and containers. Where we have way more fun innovating new ways of experiencing and delivering the bounty of human creativity than the limited throw-away model that stifles our imagination.
More than anything, it’s a world in which everything we create is kind — to the Earth, and to one another. This is the future UPSTREAM is working to bring to life.

On average a plastic bag is only used for about 12 minutes.
That plastic bag can take up to a 1000 years to degrade in a landfill, and they are also one of the most commonly found pieces of garbage floating in our oceans.

So why not ditch the plastic bag and bring your own reusable bags instead, they are way cuter anyway.

All that plastic that ends up in the sea never disappears. Instead, it slowly breaks down into smaller and smaller fragments. And then animals mistake these small pieces of plastic for food. This includes the fish that lands on your plate.
What goes in the ocean goes in you.

Port city Byblos mayor @wissamzzaarour pledges to #banthebag this year! “Let’s say that each person consumes about 300 plastic bags a year. There are around 40,000 people living in my city, so I have around 12 million plastic bags that are going into the sea or in the dump. We need to start somewhere, and we can’t wait.”

Studies have revealed that 93% of bottled water contains microplastics that are consumed when drinking bottled water. Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The effects of this are still being researched, but does drinking plastic sound like it's going to be good for you? A reverse osmosis water filer in your home not only helps stop millions of plastic waste, but also is a also a safe clean water option. Contact us to learn more. www.aquafil-filters.com

We believe education is key when it comes to reducing plastic pollution and it's never too early to start. Our daughter is just 2 but she already knows that rubbish should never be left behind, even if it's not ours. The plastic bottle she is holding is probably older than her and it would have stayed in the environment for hundreds of years. .
It may seem like a small act to pick up rubbish, but if we all join forces we can make a huge difference. It's so simple: if you see it, pick it up! And refuse single-use plastic and choose reusable items instead.

Simply put, plastic does not go away.😾 A teaser, chew toy or polyester bed that your cat may use for a week or even years, has been engineered with materials that last for 500-1000 years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐈 That’s 50 – 100 cat lifespans. It just doesn’t make sense. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At Boba&Vespa we believe in designing products that serve their purpose and then go away. Your cat isn’t going to play with it forever, so there is no reason its needs to be around that long. #PlasticFreeMeow

THIS IS ZIMBABWE 🌍

#movefortheearth #stopplasticpollution
Uncollected garbage and littering have become an epidemic blighting Zimbabwe’s cities, including the capital Harare, paradoxically known as the Sunshine City.

Once esteemed for its orderliness and cleanliness, Harare’s sparkle has all but vanished under the lofty shadows of piling rubble and refuse.

And now one man is taking matters into his hands, calling on government to designate a national cleaning day, and urging members of the public to clean up their environs.

Buhera South Member of Parliament Joseph Chinotimba brought the issue front and center this week with a demo in Harare’s Mbare suburb where he picked up trash with his car near a school. “This is a national issue, not only for the city of Harare. I am demonstrating; I am giving a sermon to everyone. Every MP, every citizen of Zimbabwe to look after the nation,” Chinotimba was quoted as saying.

Municipalities say they are hamstrung by the escalating economic crisis to carry out their mandate as residents are defaulting on their rates, including refuse collection fees.

Harare councilor Peter Moyo told VOA the accruing garbage is a time bomb that could explode anytime and cause diseases like cholera that government is not even equipped to tackle.
