|| FREE PUB || Our editor @maddyharland visited moneyless man, Mark Boyle, last week at his smallholding in Ireland. He has created a free space to learn, relax, sleep & meet like-minded people. Plus he's built the Free Pub, all from recycled materials! reading the #moneylessman in this living room feels surreal. also, there are deer outside of the window. when did these things become real?

Isn't it funny how traditions come about. I love creating little routines to look forward to 😊 Maybe it's the security and comfort they bring? For the last two years I've enjoyed a @carluccios breakfast 🥐☕️ sat outside in London after the UK Money Blogger Awards #shomos 💰 It's the perfect place to reflect, people watch and take some time out to digest all the inspiring chats from the previous night ⭐️ These days breakfast at home is full of bustle so every moment of my treat breakfast is savoured in the autumn sun 🍂 What little routines have you added to make sure you have a treat or some time out? X

In early March, I had the privilege of meeting Mark Boyle, an Irish environmental champion who gives me inspiration this #EarthDay 🌎

Having already spent three years living without money--which he wrote about in his first two books "The Moneyless Man" and "The Moneyless Manifesto"--he's now living in an off-grid cabin like a modern-day Thoreau: no cell phone, no laptop, no electricity, no gas, no running water... and writing about it (by paper and post) for a @guardian blog (he sees the irony). _____________________________________

While many of us are feeling increasingly agitated on social media, ignoring our partners and children in favor of screens, or walking like "cyborgs" down city streets completely disconnected from our surroundings and fellow humans, Mark is collecting water from a nearby spring; chopping wood to heat his cabin or make tea; caring for horses; harvesting vegetables; reading; writing; learning the tin whistle; walking to the post office to mail his weekly batch of letters; or spending tech-free time with his girlfriend and neighbors.
_____________________________________

His three-acre property in County Galway also contains a small earthen hostel and "moneyless pub," The Happy Pig, that houses and feeds visitors for free in the hope that they'll be able to reconnect with the land and live with less too, and maybe one day pay the generosity forward. To Mark, money and technology go hand-in-hand to rule our minds and destroy the planet. Technology is for efficiency, to save us time, but time only needed saving when it was equated to money.
_____________________________________

Things take longer for Mark now, and he says he misses not being able to pick up the phone to call his parents (having to mail letters instead). But he also expressed feelings of liberation and of being in harmony with nature. I don't want to glorify a primitive existence--especially when many people and problems in the world could surely be helped by technology--but I also wonder how our earth would be faring if all of us in the developed world lived a little more like Mark.

Second book of 2017. I loved it. It made me seriously reevaluate wants vs true needs, which is something I consistently mull over. I came up with a new quote today too, while having an internal conversation with Dave Ramsey. "Jesus, St. Francis and Gandhi didn't have Taco Bell or Dairy Queen. I'm not suffering because I cook dinner at home." It sounded better in my head. Also, thank you Coconino County Library system for buying this suggest e-book so that I could borrow it. That was super cool of you.

New year resolutions time, but this year doing something slightly different. For 6-months I have tried to lead a more sustainable life. Here are the top 10 things that I have been doing and will endeavour to continue to do into 2017. Feel free to share! Much love! xx

1. Currently I am trying to be vegan at home and vegetarian when out and about. Less radical would be to eat less red meat.

2. Palm oil production is causing massive problems in deforestation and habitat degradation. Check the labels on the foods you eat.

3. Consider the carbon footprint of the foods you eat and the products you buy. Support local business and encourage a local economy.

4. So 6 months in to 12 months of not flying anywhere. One short haul flight is worse than every person on that plane driving their car to the destination. Get walking!

5. Often we buy things as we have no idea what stuff we already have. I had a huge declutter when I moved, read life changing magic of tidying.
6. There is so much waste in our society. Think about the food you need for the week, freeze when necessary and ignore best before dates.

7. We all know we should recycle but maybe not so much our stuff - clothes, IT etc. We have become a disposable society and an illusion that new is somehow better.
8. Only 5% of plastic is recycled, 50% of plastics is disposed. Bags for life, avoid plastic water bottles, now using bars from Lush for my shampoo etc. You can do refills for washing liquid etc.

9. Contentious issue at present and with meat and dairy organic does not mean any better standard of animal welfare (maybe worse). Fruit and veg I still feel it is worth paying the extra money.

10. People power, we all have a responsibility. The campaigns/petitions do make a difference. Big business will only change their practice and CSR through either legislation or consumer habits. Both of which we can all change.

I love my 🚲 commute, but I do miss all the reading I was able to do when I commuted by 🚌. If you are looking for a really interesting book, The Moneyless Manifesto by Mark Boyle is at the library (or at least it will be once in done with it) and the book is free on his website. The first chapter is one of those that will change the way you think about money, the environment, and our relationship with both. #ride253 #bus253 #piercetransit @piercetransit #moneylessmanifesto #moneylessman

#DecemberReflections (5/12) • BEST BOOK OF 2016 • Definitely “Drinking Molotov Cocktails With Gandhi” by Mark Boyle, as well as his other books (“Moneyless Man” and “Moneyless Manifesto”) which I devoured one after another within two weeks or so. Blew my mind and shook me awake. Confronted me with all sorts of uncomfortable questions about what I’m doing with my life, how my choices contribute to global dysfunction, and whether or not I'm going to accept responsibility for changing the status quo. WARNING: Reading it might throw you into a bit of a funk and make you doubt everything you're doing. 🕳
