This little work, translated by #JonMSweeney, compiled those works of #StFrancisofAssisi that we feel sure were written by him (unlike the well known and beloved prayer, “Lord Make Us Instruments of Your Peace”). #StFrancis did not write much. He even expresses some subtle skepticism about book learning. To his fellow brother Anthony, who had been asked to teach theology at their new school, he writes, “Please see that you do not squelch the spirit of prayer and devotion in [your students] as they undertake [theological] studies.” His Rule allows clergy to have “only the books necessary to fulfill their office” and laity, if they can read, may only have a psalter. Despite his personal lack of book learning, and his concerns about its possible deleterious effects, he left us some beautiful works. It is appropriate to conclude with one. This is the prayer which he himself prayed as God spoke to him in the Church of San Damiano.
