Anime title: Kakegurui
Alternate title: Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler
Genres: Game, Mystery, Psychological, Drama, School, Shounen
Most of the students in Hyakkaou Academy are children of extremely rich people. Because of this, the Academy devised a unique way of supposedly preparing students for the real world. In school hours, it is a normal school teaching the usual subjects. However, after school hours, the school transforms into a gambling den. The logic for this is that money is power and those who are good at the games would come out on top of the school or the world. Jabami Yumeko transfers into the Academy to try out this aspect of the school.
The characters were pretty eccentric and unique. Each of them differ a lot from one another. It reminds me of a Danganronpa-style cast, where each character can be extremely different from one another. I especially liked and respected Yuneko (I call her Yuneko because of her little cat act in the middle of the show). She’s pretty chill and behind the crazy side that literally gasms over gambling, lies a kind-hearted person who cares for her friends. Her motive for gambling for fun and thrills rather than merely playing to win also makes the show more thrilling. The characters’ facial expressions though, just wow (I would liken them to the Gasai Yuno yandere face but a version 2.0 or 3.0 of it). On the other hand, I feel that some thrill was reduced from the show due to how the gambles in the first half of the show were handled: two chances instead of a big ‘do or die’ one. I think they solved this problem by making the gambles more ‘one chance’ and raising the stakes as the show progressed, but I still felt that they could have maximised the thrill. I also felt that they should have expanded more on Runa and Ririka.
Those who are fans of gambling and an eccentric cast of characters who differ greatly from one another could check out Kakegurui.
